These boats ar often sold with cummings 380 diesels and are relatively slow. I know a guy in the great lakes that tops out at 31mph. They sell them with 8.1liter and 8.1liter ho gas plants. I presently have the 8.1l plant in my 340 which is awesome. So I could forsee that boat being too slow with the regular 8.1l gasses. Does anyone know how the 40 sda does do with the 8.1l HO gas engines? I cant come from 40+ MPH to 31MPH just to say I spent the extra money on diesels. I'm soryy if this quesyion has been beat to death.

Hi,

I have a 2008 40DA with the 380hp diesels...I constantly run 36mph even with my dinghy on the back..burning 40gph. I love the boat. You won't see 40mph but are you always running that fast? My friend had a 2005 390DA with the 8.1s not sure if it was HO but he ran side by side with me but burning almost 80gph.

good luck!!

Thanks, thats some great info. Maybe my friends boat isn't trimmed out correctly or something else is going on. They are a great boat and that is what I want to eventually move up to. Personally I think it is the perfect size for handling, trips and docking. Just need to find a fresh water, low hour diesel boat and pull the trigger.

Note to self. Never buy a used boat from this guy who "constantly" runs his boat at WOT. The "40 gph" number is WOT per the spec sheets (20 gph per engine) and it's absurd someone would say it's OK to run a boat like that "constantly".

If you are looking for a "go fast" boat that is 40 feet, Sea Ray is not going to be for you. If you do a search on this site, you'll find that guys with newer 40DA's (that actually read the operators manual) post they cruise less than 30 mph... If you find a guy selling you a boat that says it cruises all day at 36 mph, run away... run away fast.. Not only are the motors going to be questionable, the boat would have the hull beat to crap in anything but flat calm conditions. You won't be running a 40 foot Sea Ray more than 25 mph in anything greater than 2 foot waves or the doors and drawers will be falling off.

Reminds me of a guy (transient) that was docked behind me a few years ago.... swore that "diesels like to be run hard" and always ran at WOT... problem was, one of his engines was now "burning about a gallon of coolant every 4 hours" but he didn't think that was a big issue.

I believe this actor started a small diesel engine company a couple of years ago and named it after himself...

I don't think so....

Your numbers you state are WOT numbers not cruise numbers, I know this boat with the same power, I operate one on a regular basis for a friend of mine. You are not giving the OP correct information, just because you choose to opeate your boat outside of the recomeded cruise range of 80-85% of WOT. This information that you are posting is not what is recomended by by the manaufacturer. This boat with this power is a 24kt boat at 85% and that's a real number, burning 32 GPH...
