just bought an 89 230 weekender. has anyone put/have rod holders in gunwales? they are pretty narrow? Also, has anyone added a windlass? thx.

I had that model boat and thought about putting rod holders in it but sold it first and then put them in my new boat instead. I would recommend using flush mounts in the gunwale near the transom. Look before you drill, there are some wires - and vent tubes for the blower in there. You can do it, but they need to move (an easy job). Also, there may be a piece of teak on the gunwale there. Just pull out the little plugs that hide the screws and take the teak blocks off. Yours may not have the teak though, it's a newer model.

Also, some people rig a 2x4 across the back of the boat and mount rod holders and downriggers on that, but it looks kind of ****ty and has to be removed before you can go pleasure cruising. The flush mount's are never in the way.

About the windlass, you can mount it on the lid of the anchor locker like mine is. The lid is made of plywood just behind the bow pulpit attached with a piano hinge. You may want to bolt the lid down when you put a windlass on it because that will be a lot of pulling on the hinge. My windlass is a horizon that mounts on top of the lid and it works well. Some of the styles that mount under the lid need more fall for the rope than you will have room for. Side note, in my opinion the windlass is not worth it unless you do a lot of anchoring. Maybe wait a year on that one and see if it would really get used that much. Or just do it right away, what the hell!
