when pulling into a strange marina along your trip,

how do you know where to temporarily dock?? who do you see??

how does it work...?

newbie....

Contact them on the VHF and or check at the fuel dock.

You use your VHF radio and hail them. Typically on Ch 16 and say something like "Hooters Marina... Hooters Marina... Hooters Marina.... This is Thong Man... Over"

They'll come back with something like

"Thong Man... This is Hooters Marina... Switch and answer 72"

Which means to respond "This is Thong Man switching to 72"

Switch the Radio to ch 72...

And say "Hooters Marina this is Thong Man"

And then converse with them... like "I need some wings" or whatever...

Turn on your VHF and just listen and follow to get how it's done... and read the chapter in Chapmans... and take a boating safety class...

Some people use their cell phone... I don't.

VERY GOOD....Thanks all....:)

Buy a cruising guide book. Better yet, ask for one for the holiday you celebrate next month.

OK Thanks Julia..

Gary's right on and made my day, I'd love to hear that on the radio..

I've used the cell phone route early on, just as like you I was new. But as my season progressed I used the VHF it is just easier.

Also going to the operating channel of the marina on the VHF you get to hear traffic headed to the same marina. So that when Thong Man gets his slip assignment you can hang out and not interfere with his docking !!!! Some times the marina staff have hand held VHF's and are guiding people in, if your not on the working channel you run the risk of interfering with the process...

As a wise captain once told me, most of the time when boating is spent doing nothing... Meaning most times your waiting in the water and you need to be comfortable with handling your boat and maintaining a position while other traffic is docking..
