Newbie Hit Crab Trap...

Was taking the boat over to its winter home on land and hit a crab trap line buoys and all on plane at approximately 22 knots. engine made a zing sound, we slowed instantly and I immediately pulled her into neutral and shut it down. The crab trap rope had caught on the leg above the prop but had not wound itself around anything but the leg. When I cut the line loose and looked at the prop and leg I couldn't see any damage. After pulling her out that day for the winter the only visible sign was marks where the line had cleaned the scum off the leg. My question is should I be worried about engine damage / Leg damage?? that amount of force instantly on the leg would pull it from the full down position while she was still underway..

Thoughts?

Once you continued on, was everything normal? The trim pump on the outdrive has an internal relief valve that bleeds off oil from the trim cylinders if you strike an object. The noise you heard could've been many things. When a prop suddenly cavitates, there are all sorts of noises, boat squats, the engine revs. As long as you didn't hear a loud boat shuttering bang before you heard the noise...and all you saw was scum cleaned off the drive, I'd think you didn't damage anything....helluva way to end a season isn't it?

Thanks for your help and yes no loud bang was heard and the sound I heard was the prop cavitating (thought about it last night). Hopefully next season is better, new marina and no obstacle course to contend with.

I'd be more worried about the fisherman seeing you cut his line and then you suddenly find out one morning that your boats is missing... or at least 6 or 7 feet lower than you would expect it to be. I hope you at least tied the rope back together.

Other than that, as mentioned above, I'm sure your boat is fine.
