Its done. The old man and I settle on new toy 2 July,
1993 ,
twin 4.3l V6's (ad says 220hp, I suspect 175ish)
alpha one (series II maybe, I don't really know),
300 Sundancer

Have booked the week off to babysit it thru a couple of days in the shop to
  • replace port riser/thermostat etc,
  • investigate why water in starboard leg gearbox oil (searay service centre thought bad seal)
  • full service of engines and legs
  • Starboard trim sender replacement (apparently it is "pinched")

Whilst the people who know what they're doing get that lot sorted out, the two new, proud captains will be
  1. sorting out genset battery
  2. working out if genset needs a service
  3. investigating why I can hear solenoid click by can't lower anchor
  4. fix/replace 27mhz radio
  5. polishing fiberglass

Most importantly, will be rechristening boat "Preparation" in honor of my old man, who's fav saying when we were young was "90% of any job is preparation". This boat has been a long time coming.

Advice time.

  1. If anyone has any experience with this vintage/size SR, anything particular to pay attention to?
  2. Any tips on fix/replace anchor winch?
  3. Can I lower the anchor without the anchor winch? (very important for maiden voyage!)
  4. Can someone point me to a good reference on what to do to polish the fiberglass?

Given the 4.3l V6s came back with questionable compression (starboard was ok, ranged from 150-180, port was clapped out at 120-150) I suspect she'll cruise around 15/16kt on 3000rpm, which is fine for a first timer who just wants to get their feet wet. Question, repowering one of these things, do you really get what you pay for in terms of improvement to the boat, or is it like trying to polish a t..d? do you go the drive and engine, or can you marry your existing drives with bigger engines? Rest of survey was very complimentary (or wouldn't have bought!)

Photos in 3 weeks :)

*really* hoping the weather is good that week!

Congratulations, welcome to boating. If motors have 4 barrel carbs they are 220 hp.Should be able to lower and raise anchor with wrench stored with winch.Good luck.

Sounds like you have your work cut out for you. Hopefully the seller made some price adjustments! Best of luck to ya!

I would think you'd be closer to 20-21 knots at 3000rpm with those motors, but I could be wrong. Port compression is a bit low but not sure how bad a problem that actually is. You may have to feed her oil and/or think about pulling the heads and having them reworked. Probably worth a leak-down test at some point.

Long story, but yes, we offered around 70% of what we thought was "fair" value (but market *very* slow in Oz) and he took it straight off. After survey, we asked for, and got a 10% reduction on the agreed price - essentially "going halves" on the work we needed to perform to bring it up to speed.

That chops to about 66% of what the insurance company valued it at. If all works out, in a couple of years I'll do the numbers on repower or rebuild.

Any thoughts on a polish? I'm not particularly fussed, but my old man is really keen to get it shiny - its a retirement lifestyle investment for himself, so I guess I'll help polish too :D

Recon...polish...Buff Magic then their wax. Can't beat it. Congrats on the new boat. CSR is a great vault of info. Mark

hi All, I know the answer is already in the forum somewhere, but ive only got access to my phone.

Didn't realize the hatches had layer of wood(?), well, something that rots, between fiberglass. Ill prepared, ironic given the name.

Any pointers on how to fix this?

Many thanks in advance.

Ah, memory of other threads is coming back.

Correct me if I've got this wrong, but best to
1. Dig out the rot
2. Let dry
3. Epoxy
4. Cure
5. Seal
6. replace

Unfortunately we don't have time for removing the rot and drying (middle of winter and need to move boat Thursday)

Plan is to just ignore rot and seal, then repeat in summer.

Anyone have a better idea?
