New Resins

its true that resins, gel coats, and paints are all changing and have changed. Just try to repair a blue hull searay with thier own gelcoat- loooooooook out!

As far as wicking water- sounds like crap to me.

The one to watch is waterbased paints, california has mandated all body shops to switch to waterbased paints in the next few years, the rest of the country will be sure to follow.

Interesting to see how that will apply to boats.

Rob-
We just ran tests on ulta low VOC water based paint Cali compliant, here at work. They are not there yet. Took over four hours to cure and the adhesion was quite poor.

We have not noticed any change in physical properties with the new additive to the resin. Flex modulus and elongation were all very close to the norm. It comes down to the glass ratio of the laminate.

We are all going to be SOL on other products just like when they took the lead out of gel coats colors. A few years later they figured that out too.

If it were easy every one would be doing it!

Im talking waterbased topside paints.

Same for cars, all shops in california will have to use waterbased paints soon or be closed down.

Some people use waterbased bottom paints and claim to see no difference, I have not used any myself.

Rob.......I know you don't like the blue/purple hulls but since I have one what is the solution when it comes time to repair them? Does spraying the gelcoat on work better than just patching and sanding smooth? I had a "factory" patch on my last green hulled 240 Sundeck Sea Ray that never quite matched either. Are some colors just problematic when it comes time to match them and if so what do you do about it?

all colors are harder to repair, the solution is usually to paint the repair or at least clearcoat it.

The blue gel itself is water thin and translucent as well, it also comes contaminated with tiny specs of white gel in the cans for some reason.
