1989 Bow Rider 160

100 HP mercury out board
I bought a 1989 Sea Ray 160 bow rider abt. a week ago. Over all the boat seems in really good shape for its age seats are good has just 100 hours on it. It was dry stored. I just got tired of hanging out under the bridges at the beach like a homeless woman with my daughter fishing. My budget was kind of slim. Did I know what I was doing absolutely not but this one looked like someone at least took care of it. I am a desk clerk I emptied my savings and most of my checking to get this boat then pay taxes insurance and reg. tittle . We had a pontoon 15yr ago its been a while. My husband can drive the boat and back the trailer I am the driving force behind buying and paying for it. Our priorities are different I worry about salt away and hydraulic leaks he worries abt speaker covers. I was going to get a simple aluminum v hull fishing boat but my fishing buddy announced she was having a baby and my priorities changed to a larger more comfy baby container we can fish from.

Gear shift throttle control works for every function except for the button that lets you disengage the propeller and give it gas. The trigger or button is all play. Does anyone have something showing how everything is suppose to be hooked up so when we look at it we can see what we need to tighten or replace. It may be obvious when we open it up but if not it would be nice to see what it should look like.

We changed the oil in the lower unit and are changing the plugs and fuel filter this weekend the motor is stalling only when it is not in gear and idling

The only other issue we have found is the seals on the Teleflex steering ram are leaking. I ordered the seal kit and the filler bleeder tube. Ran out of money and want to get the sea star hydraulic fluid white lithium grease and corrosion resistant stuff along with a ground wire for it before we take it apart. I read like crazy and watch u tube when I want to get something done so I have checked the steering rod it is not scratched or pitted in any way so the seals should work to end the leak.

Congrats on the new (used) boat!!! Hope your family enjoys it and you get many years of use out of it.

Your husbands a lucky man to have a wife who is so into boating. Congratulations on the purchase! I'm certain you will get some answers or maybe someone will post a diagram of your throttle assembly, there's a lot of knowlegable and helpful Sea Ray owners on this site.

To be a fly on the wall for that conversation.... haha..

Well done.. and congrats on your purchase...

Thank you all Blaster it my unhealthy obsession with fishing that made me want a boat to take me to places I could not get by land. The sad thing is I am not even that good at it I just like to go fishing.
Sideways it was not that bad LOL He learned a long time ago that I am not beyond printing directions and grabbing the tools if he doesn't keep a close eye on me. There is a 60% chance it will never be the same again when I do.

Welcome, that's a great starter boat! I did some hunting on your throttle assembly using the parts list for your year boat, I can send you that if needed, just PM me with your email address. I can't yet find a drawing of the assembly but I am still hunting. As for the idling issue, it may just need to be adjusted. There are many great folks in the forum that can assist you with most problems that arise. I love seeing wives get into boating, now go out there and enjoy and by all means please be safe

Congratulations on the purchase and best if luck with the minor repairs -- and fishing!

Congrats on the new to you boat, Post some pictures when you can.

The Throttle issue is user error on our part press trigger pull out. We did not know what was pulled out and a guy I met at work explained this idiot terms.

As for the stalling issue he suggested we you start your engine because the boat has sit in dry storage for a very long time. It only stalls when its not in gear.

Thank you Jim, he said to adjust the idle higher and try the start your engine stuff if that did not do it carb cleaning was the next step.
