New helm seat

Any thoughts on these relatively inexpensive helm seats? I'm thinking about giving one a try, but the bolster makes it look like you'd end up sitting too far back when it's down.

How about installing a thick piece of starboard or the like a little bit forward and then adding a sliding track like this.

I'm planning on installing a seat pedestal like this one so forward and back won't be an issue. I'm just talking about the seat distance from your lumbar/tailbone to the edge of the bolster.

Are you talking about removing the current sliding bench style helm seat and replacing it with a bolster seat? What boat are you thinking of doing this with?

I totally dig that idea. Keep up the pictures and updates, please.

Correct. I plan on setting it up like the pic below.
This will be in my 97 Sundancer 290da. I have a link in my signature to everything I do to the boat. I'll definitely chronicle that as well.
Apparently it's 15" front to back on the seat pad so I'll have to start breaking out the measuring tape.

I like it! Hard to say from the photos, and maybe it's the angle, but it looks like it might be taller than your other seat

That pic is a factory set up. 330 maybe? I'll definitely have to take some measurements before I do anything.

I think Ill have to use a sliding mount like Mitch posted on my 96' 330DA because the entire bench seat is a fiberglass structure.

Mine is too, but I might cut a hole in it or modify it another way so I can use the pedestal.

Thick starboard piece overhanging the fiberglass seat base with the sliding track in between another piece of starboard with a short pedestal seat on top is what I was thinking.
Oh, gotcha. I think I'd rather clear the floor area under the seat and make it look more like the pic I posted above. I'm not sure I'll be able to do it the way mine is built though. We'll see when the time comes.

You may be sorry losing that storage space, plus you should consider the impact on resale.
I would think a Captain's chair would help resale if it wasn't hacked in. Storage space doesn't seem like it'd be a big deal in that area for me.

My cockpit heater coil and blower is mounted directly under the helm seat in that storage compartment. So I could not cut a hole there. I might not get the swivel but I would absolutely go for the bolster style seat. But its funny when maneuvering I'm standing more towards center while operating the shifters anyway. Bolster seats are cool though.

And, unless you are short, there is not enough arch/canvas height on your 330 to stand while underway anyway.

I stand towards the center right now too because of the steering wheel. Thankfully there's plenty of head room. You make a good point about the location of your heater. I'm tempted to install one. The only thing that's really uncomfortable with my set up is how far forward the factory seat is.

I have a 1990 Sundancer 310DA and I am really looking to replace the captain's side bench seat with a modern captains chair. With the full fiberglass set up of the current arrangement of the cockpit and storage areas, I am struggling to find a suitable solution. Any suggestions for this or my specific boat will be greatly appreciated.
