I am about to pull the trigger buying a 2005 290 Amberjack. It needs new electronics so I intend to replace the old Raytheon C-80 ChartPlotter and VHF radio immediately. What I want is a good up to date plotter and fishfinder. I have decided on either the Garmin or Simrad. Will also replace the transducer. Wondering if anyone has experience with the transom mount vs a thru hull mount. The AJ has B3 outdrives.

Take a look at the new Axiom products from Raymarine. I was originally going to go with Simrad but found these very compelling. For fishing you may be very interested in their Realvision setup take a look at some of the online videos.

I just picked up an Axiom 9 RV MFD but probably will just convert my existing transducer over for the time being on my 340SDA. I also got the Quantum Chirp radar.

As far as the transducer selection goes I opted for the through hull bronze when I previously upgraded my 260DA as I wanted to keep it as far away as possible from the transom and drives to reduce any interference from cavitation.

Thanks for the info. I will look at Raytheon.

I just went through the entire process. Ended up going to Furuno. Long story short it depends on what features are most important to you. Furuno charges more to get the CHIRP sounder and I think Garmin includes it. Not sure on Simrad or Raymarine...

If you are buying Radar then the options get even more complicated, with broadband and open array vs dome...

Furuno has a rebate that ends 12/31 and is significant so take a look if you are ready now. Call Jim at BOE, he will take care of you.

+1 on BOE Marine. That is where I got mine and Jim (as well as his staff) was quite helpful in answering all my questions.
