I am selling an 04 280 dancer and it needs new camper canvas I realize new canvas would help sell but will I get the money it cost back or just sell as is realizing I'll get less than if the canvas was new -everything else on boat is excellent which way generally pays off best? Thanks

You might not get your money back...but you might sell your boat before other boats your size in your area. Worked fo me once with a 1992 27' DA. If you are listing with a broker ask them what they think also

You will leave more room for negotiating. Is all of the canvas bad or just certain pieces?

If you do, order before end of month with GLBT. They have a 20% off sale right now.

Careful, if you put new canvas on you might rethink selling it!

I'm only guessing but, if the boats in great shape other wise.....I'd do the canvas to sell it.
It will sell quicker with new canvas.
Keep in mind it won't need the tip top of the line canvas job.
It's one of the things the buyer sees first.
I know a real boater might overlook it needing canvas and he'll have a chance to beat the price down and do the canvas the way HE wants it.
But, a lot of boaters don't know what they want and want it to seem brand new to get the wife or girlfriend to like it.

Probably 9 put of 10 people to look at it will complain about the canvas and whatever the price of the canvas is they will automatically double that and take it off the asking price.

If the boat is really nice in all other aspects, replace the canvas from GLBT and leave nothing for a buyer to complain about. You can then market the boat as a step above the rest.

In my opinion, I believe it is dependent on what end of the market range you are trying to sell the boat. If you are priced low to mid, I wouldn't replace the canvas. The last two boats I have purchased I had to replace the canvas the year after I bought them, but I bought them at the low end of the market range. If you are trying to get maximum dollars, you may want to replace and be sure the difference makes sense as a full canvas replacement is no cheap endeavor! Just my opinion, and you know what they say about opinions! Rob

I say it depends on the buyer. I've been accused of being frugal more than once in my life. If I didn't plan to use the canvas that often I would rather buy the boat for a few dollars off and not have to deal with canvas I'm not using. You can always offer to split the cost of canvas with the prospective buyer if that's what it takes to seal the deal. If the rest of the boat is in good repair, you're already a cut above the rest. I can't believe how some people let them fall apart.

The way I read your initial post, only the camper canvas is bad. If that is the case and the Bimini & eisenglass is all good, I'd skip the replacement. I bought my boat with various different canvas onboard but, the camper was the least of my concerns as long as the rest was serviceable. I used the slant back canvas primarily in the beginning. As long as the rest is good & the potential buyer can protect the cockpit from the elements I think you would be ok. Add a few bucks to your price & be prepared to come down for the camper. You know ANY potential buyer is going to find things to negotiate the price down. If it doesn't sell, heck, you could always add it later!

At least get a quote from Doramar. I just had some zippers replaced and they were very reasonable. With Great Lake Boat Tops you have to install the snaps. It is not hard but figure on a few hours of work.

Tough decision, hard to say, from the outside. Just the fact that you're going to replace it, shows the pride we take in our boats :)

Some of us just ain't right.
The morning of the closing when I sold my 44, I was detailing the power cords when the buyer showed up. He said "you're still going to sell me the boat, right?"
Sometimes our behavior as it relates to our boats just doesn't make any sense.:smt100

I didn't realize you were local to me. Tommy & Kenny at Doramar are great guys & do top notch work. They are the ones who did my tops a few years ago. I only use them for all of my canvas needs! Good luck!

DORAMAR seems like they will be good. Since the canvas was in good shape he is going to just replace the glass and a couple of zippers. When I asked about how much it would be to replace the whole thing he mentioned best bet would be to order it from great lakes boat tops and then if I needed help installing it he would come down and assist with any problems. Seemed to be a straight shooter. I will report on quality of there work in hopefully 2 weeks.
