Hello All

Last year I purchased 2005 300 SeaRay. Beautiful boat. One previous owner(20 HRS) and has all the bells and whistles. I will be retiring in a year or 2 and my wife thought this would be a nice way to spend summers. I live on Long Island and dock the boat in a marina on the Great South Bay. My main problem to overcome is docking. This is my first full year and the boat does not go too far. Just on the bay and back home to my slip.

Have been visiting this site and really appears to have knowledgeable folks with helpful advice. As a rookie boater looking for useful info and advice. I am sure I will find it here.

Welcome! Stern drives or inboards? Makes a fair difference when maneuvering around docks. Congrats!

Hello John,

My SeaRay has Twin I/Os. I need lots of practice. We have great beaches here on Fire Island. I did get there with a captain supplied by the dealer but not experienced enough to venture alone with wife. I'll get there.

Ray,

If you haven't already, check your local Power Squadron and Coast Guard Auxiliary for when they have their next boating course for the public (both can be found on the net). A little classroom time to learn the rules of the road and basic piloting skills will be a complement to your hands-on practice with the boat.

Does your wife have any interest in operating the boat, or just going out with you in charge? Even if you will be captain all the time, it would be good for her to learn basic operations just in case something happens to you -- basic boat handling, basic docking, VHF radio operation. I had a buddy of mine take my wife out on our boat for an afternoon, just so she could get more comfortable operating her. I figured she would learn more from him than she could from me.
