Hello,

I'm considering purchasing a new 330 Sundancer, and I like the look of the teak cockpit and standard swim platform. I don't want the teak to turn gray. If I get this option, will I regret it because of the amount of work required to keep it looking good? I know this is a subjective question, but I would like to get some opinions.

Go with a synthetic teak, i.e. Nuteak or Flexiteek. Doesn't gray, easy to clean, looks fantastic but does get hot in direct sunlight. I had on all my boats.

Thanks for the advice. Two follow-up questions:

1. Did a Sea Ray dealer offer the synthetic teak? It's not an option on the Sea Ray website to "build a boat."

2. Anyone have any experience with the teak Sea Ray is putting on their recent boats?

I second the recommendation to go with synthetic decking. Lots of options available. I had PlasDeck installed and am very happy with the result. If you're concerned about the deck getting hot, go with a newer product that is designed to be cooler. PlasDeck has that option called CoolTeak (which I used), the others probably do as well.

Hi Sam,
I just put NuTeak in the cockpit and CFlor (same company as NuTeak just made for interior) in the cabin of my 340 and it looks fantastic and is easy to maintain. Actually there's next to no maintenance.
I wouldn't install teak for a few reasons but that's my preference not everyone's;
1. expensive
2. stains easily eg red wine
3. high maintenance
My test for NuTeak was to put a sample in the sink at home, poor red wine and cooking oil on it, leave it overnight. Next morning it just washed off in water.
If it does get something on it that won't hose off just scrub it with a scrubbing brush or a light sand with 40 grit - problem solved
My experience for what it's worth.
Nice choice of boat by the way.
Enjoy
Chris

I have the teak on my swim platform. I oil it once a year. It does fade gray but I don't mind that. If you put teak in the cockpit it won't always be in direct sunlight assuming you keep the boat covered when not in use so fading shouldn't be a big concern.

I have teak all over. Swim step and cockpit. It does look nice, but it is a pita to deal with. You have to clean and reapply new stain every 6 months. You can let it grey, but the wood will dry out and crack sooner with the oils.

Thanks all for the input.

If I were to go with synthetic teak, I guess I would then order the boat without teak, and once it is delivered to me, go out and find a synthetic teak outfit that will install it for me, right?

Can it easily be installed at my dock, or do you typically bring the boat to their facility?

I've installed both Flexiteak (more of a foam-type material) and Plasdeck (looks and feels more like real teak). Flexiteak is nice for the soft, foam feel - it's what Sea Ray is using on the smaller boats. Personally, I like the more traditional look and feel of the Plasdeck and I put that on the bow of my 260DA when I installed a windlass (I went through TT Custom Marine). Both products, however, are very simple to install and can be done with the boat in the slip. It may require the making of a template, if the company you choose does not already have one for your model. But that is not hard, either - it just needs to be exact.

Last week I received an estimate of $8,000 to purchase and have them install synthetic teak on a new 2016 330 Sundancer. On the Sea Ray website, the option for (real) teak is $4,500. Does that price estimate sound reasonable. Both are for the cockpit and standard swim platform. I was surprised to see such a large price difference.

Lazy,

Looks good. How long have you had it and can you tell how it wears? Also, can you tell us the cost for the cockpit and swim platform area?

Did you do the install yourself or hire it done?

Thx

$8K sounds high, but it may depend on what type of flooring you're using and accessibility to the boat? Hard to say, though, without an itemized list. Labor might take up a bigger chunk than I'm thinking. There's always more labor involved after the boat is built, than when it's on the assembly line. Can't hurt to get a second opinion.

Seevee... I did the install myself. Truth be told, the reason I used it was because I also installed the windlass. The windlass' "hole" is in a different location than where the hawse pipe was. So rather than trying to duplicate the non-skid pattern or use a piece of starboard to cover the part of the hole that would be exposed, I used the fake teak stuff. Besides, I wanted to give it a shot and see how the stuff worked out. That picture was taken about 5 years ago. I've since sold the boat, but winterize the boat for the new owner so I see it every year. It still looks just like the picture. Pricing... at the time, I think I paid about $250 for that size. I made a template, sent it off to the company, and they returned what you see along with the proper mastik (glue). Roughly speaking, the square footage of that piece is probably about 1/3 of a large swim platform. I don't know if the price correlates perfectly with "size", though. Meaning, I don't know if a swim platform would be exactly 3 times the piece I have, or not.

Two weeks ago I installed product from "plasteak" company, teak and holly vinyl cabin flooring. boat was a friends 32Luhrs open. removed the rotted carpet, cleaned floor. made a paper tracing template of entire floor area. Transferred to vinyl sheet, cut out vinyl with knife, then carefully glued down.

product was very good quality, about 1/8 inch thick.

What was your price per sq ft, and the warranty?

check website-- I think it was 50.00 per lineal foot...comes six feet wide so 50 bucks for 6 square feet...warranty..don't know.
