I have had a few posts previously, but we have officially completed our first week of boating.
We had our 30 Sundancer delivered on saturday last week.
I saw Seagull coming in on Saturday as we were goping out, as we dock on the Housatonic. That is a beautiful boat.
I was looking for some info on boating in the Long Island Sound.
Thanks

Welcome to CSR, congratulations on the new SunDancer

Welcome!

Where do you call home?

I'm at the very last marina in Shelton, Ayers Landing.

We are at the Dock in Stratford, CT. There is a lot going on there, current, wind , tide, etc.

Yep, strong currents, that's for sure... :smt101

Wait till you see it in the spring.

It's nice up river, however it takes about 45 minutes to get to the mouth, going with the tide.

My former boat was a 300DA and we've been boating on Long Island sound for 8 years now with many trips to Conn. I'll do my best to help with any questions you might have.

We are looking for some places to anchor with kids. I heard Port Jeff is good. I was wondering if anyone knew of some other places.

Port Jeff is nice. It has two good anchoring spots just inside the breakwater, one to the west and another more secluded spot to the east. Not much east of Port Jeff until you get to Mattituck about 25 miles east of there. There is a good anchoring spot/beach a few miles west of Port Jeff between Old Field Point and Cranes Neck Point. The next place west of there would be Northport/Huntington Harbor about 12 miles west. A lot of boats from the Norwalk/Stamford/Westbrook area go there and raft up in Lloyd Harbor.

Hello neyc! Welcome. It's nice to be seen and recognized. I'll look for you out there too.

We go to Port Jeff all the time. Anchoring in the sand pit to the East (left) is tight because of all the moorings, I can't fit - but you should be able to squeeze in. The big draw here is a very protected anchorage and sand dunes to entertain the kids. To the West (right) as you enter is Conscience Bay. There is plenty of room to anchor there. You can also go all the way in to town and get a mooring or dock space. We often do this as the kids love to shop and eat in town.

Closer to home we love to go to Charles Island in Milford. It is a nice (not so protected) anchorage. One problem is that the island itself is closed due to nesting birds. You are not allowed to go ashore, although we see lots of people doing it. Milford Harbor is also nice with a town dock to tie up if you want to get food or shop.

We live in Milford. Do you anchor on the Milford Harbor side of Charles Island?

Welcome - I go to Norwalk alot for lunch. Many of my friends anchor out there around the Islands but I personally have not attempted this yet. I spent this Sunday at Penfield beach in Fairfield. We anchored out, and there is a spot to bring dingies to shore. There is concession stand on the beach.

BTW - are you at the Dock? - 2 of my friends just put thier boats there.

The anchorage at Charles Island is on the North side. Be sure not to cross the bar which extends from the NW corner of the island to the mainland. At low tide you are well protected from southerly wind and waves. In a north wind we like to anchor closer to the Milford mainland. The Gulf is full of waterskiers, kayakers and jetskis - a boaters playground.

I would also second Fairfield Beach and the Norwalk Islands. We especially like going to Cockenoe Island for anchoring, swimming and clamming.

port jeff is fun for the kids, sledding down the sandunes. The Sandhole is a good and interesting spot look for Casmut state park,on the left heading into coldspring harbor (also nice for a quiet anchor and picnik or grilltime)and Oyster bay. Look for Zieglers and scotts cove in darien,ct just south of the norwalk islands which by the way if you dont have local knowledge you will hit rocks. Anchor, swim and spend the night. Cockenoe is nice but at low tide expect to ping ot tink a few. Dont go in to far.

Yes we are at the dock.
Thanks to everyone for the info

Welcome Aboard  . Post some pics of your boat in the virtual marina :smt024 .

As Dave stated the Sandhole is a great place to anchor up. It can be tricky to get into, escpecially at low tide so be careful the first time. We weren't sure so about the approach, so we waited a few minutes and followed another boat after we saw he got in safely.
