ok i was wondering i posted a while back about my prop not engaging (http://www.byowneryachts.com/forums/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=33691#33691)
everyone told me that i had spun the hub so with that being the conclusion i bought a new prop. my question is now should my prop spin freely when in forward gear with the boat not running? is there a shear (sp?) pin on my prop? any help would be appreciated i want to get this thing in the water asap. thanks in advance for any help!

The prop will only spin free in neutral. In gear, it should make a clicking sound.

Did you ever check the shift cables?

i have checked the shift cables but what exactly should i be checking for anything specific? thanks H2O

Look under the outdrive with it trimmed up for easier viewing. You'll be able to see a shaft with with a rectangular pad. Have someone shift the drive into forward and see if this shaft moves. If it moves in forward and then reverse, I'd say something let go in the drive if you can turn the prop easy.

I agree with H2O. The prop should be "engaged" in gear, and free in neutral. Inside the lower unit is a "shear" unit, to protect the gears should you hit something.

Did you hit something?

Sea Ray 300-
is there any place on the net with a digram of this "shear" unit you are talking about? what happened was i went into a shallow area with a lot of sludge and i was churning up mud and muck and then the prop stopped engaging. Thanks!!!

Matt...............here is a diagram and parts list from Stem to Stern's web site.

Part number 66 is identified as the cross pin. This may have sheared.

While I think this is the correct diagram for your drive, to be absolutely sure you should go to their site and search for yourself at this link. http://mercruiserparts.stemtostern.com/MercruiserParts/mercruiser_sterndrives.asp

It also looks to me like replacement of the pin (if in fact that is the problem) may not be a do-it-yourself project. But I'll leave that decision up to you.
