Need thoughts, Melbourne area

My youngest son was accepted at Florida Tech Masters program for Applied Behavioral Science:smt038. He is looking to relocate from Winter Haven, Fl late this summer. Curious about the area, good/bad areas? He is currently working as an initial investigator for Polk County CYS. Thanks for any assistance.

Melbourne itself is a nice quiet area. I lived there for a few years back in the late 90's. Drive down to the beaches and it still looks like old Florida compared to Tampa/St. Pete or Miami and such. Just watch your speed becasue the surrounding towns are small and the police have nothing better to do.

Hey Tony, I grew up in Melbourne and also went to FIT. What a nice area to be in. College is awesome and Melbourne is close to a lot of attractions. A nice area for boating and fishing. Also the beaches in that area are really nice. I did a lot of surfing in that area in my younger years. The wife and I have talked about moving back down in that area. It would be nice to boat all year round.

Melbourne and the surrounding areas are very nice, and real estate is shockingly reasonable compared to other areas. The beaches are very uncrowded. My girlfriend, a traveling nurse, did an assignment in Melbourne last fall. As far as boating goes, it looks to me that you need to go pretty far to get an inlet, so most of the boating is limited to the river, which is quite shallow. Also, I was surprised by the lack of "boatable" bars and restaurants on the water. That said, it is a helluva lot better than freezing ones ass off in the Northeast for the winter, that's for sure!
