Need NC Marina to Dry Dock and Paint Bottom

While you are in Wilmington you may also want to check out Bennett Brothers http://www.bbyachts.com/ They are across the river from them and have the same setup. From the people I've talked to they are very reasonable and are pretty easy to work with.

Thanks. Just called them and as I am finding out in NC, they will not allow you to do any painting "especially" bottom painting. You have to pay them to do the work.........

Tom,

I am located in RDU (Cary) as well. I have been here for 20 years. The only places I have found that have what you seem to need to lift your boat, provide a work area and allow do-it-yourself projects are down at the coast. I know two personally;

1. Mark Henley, owns McCotter's Marina in Washington, NC. He has a travelift, boat ramp and do-it-yourself yeard. I bought my 260 DA from him in March. He is a great guy and his yard rates seem very reasonable. His number is 252-975-2174

2. Paul Wells, owns Triton Yacht Sales & Marina in Oriental, NC. He is a little farther away from us (about a 2/2 hour trip). However, he has all the facilities and a do-it-yourself yard. I have known Paul for years - he has hauled and moved my sailboat several times (Kerr Lake). He is actually moving it down to his do-it-yourself yard at the end of September. He has great rates for his yard. His number is 252-249-2001.

If you speak to either of these gentlemen, give them my regards.

Robin Byers

Thanks Robin,

I called both and they are both cheaper than Cape Fear. I will be going down to visit next week.

Paul say hey.............???? What ever that means:lol:

Tom,

Great. Unless things have recently changed - both of these guys have always let you do your own bottomwork. I think Paul wants his guys to move the stands around for you though - insurance thing and they may restrict the use of some strippers, etc.

Tom,

Yeah, I figured that you probably had already asked that important question, but I was talking to Paul anyway, so I thought I would go ahead and bring up the bottom painting subject.

Anyway, I have completely re-done my 32' sailboat bottom. Had serious blistering. Ground off all of the gelcoat, filled and faired some voids and grinder slips and then 6 coats of Interprotect epoxy, followed by 2 coats of anti-fouling. I am just beginning to work on refinishing my coach-top and deck. Anything I can tell you about my experience with the epoxy or bottom work - just let me know. If you choose Paul's yard - then I'll see you down there.

Thanks again! I most likley will see you. Just look for the 86 300 sedan with Alaska numbers on it.

We visited both places this past weekend and we will be going with Paul at Triton Boats. We were very impressed with him and the time he took to show us around and his offer to help at any time. He showed us a sail boat that had some bad blisters on it and I am hoping mine will be be anything close to that.

I also think the deciding factor was that the Admiral liked Orential. We had lunch down at the marina and stopped by WM and bought our first gallon of bottom paint.....When I open it I will be looking for the gold flakes!

I decided to go with Interlux products and the Micron Extra.

Thanks Robin for the information and hope to see you. Plan to have the boat down there next month.

Tom,

Great. Paul will be hauling my sailboat down to the yard early next month as well. I look forward to seeing you there.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading this post. This post goes to show how useful this forum is. Plus I am out at Atlantic beach right now in NC Outer Banks. AKBassKing hope it works out for you.

Thanks. We are going to tow the tub down to Oriental this next weekend and start the project. Will post the project.
