I have recently purchased a Sea Ray 390 and the boat name has been painted on the transom.

In order to comply with USCG requirements I must replace this name, and am having extreme difficulty in removing the old painted on name.

I have tried paint remover, denatured alcohol, and finally sanding with 1,000 grit sandpaper. The 1,000 sandpaper did work, but it will take me days (if not weeks!) to completely remove the name by this method.

I have heard that oven cleaner might work in removing the old name but have not tried it yet.

Do any of you folks know a good way to remove the old painted on name?

Thanks in advance!

painted lettering removal

we have used oven cleaner very effectively to remove painted lettering off of painted vehicles. I' m fairly sure you would be happy with how it removes the paint, but you may want to check to see that whatever oven cleaner you may use is compatible with fiberglass, assuming that's what the boat is. If no one can tell you whether is will effect the glass you could always test it in some out-of-site, obscure non structural area to see how it may or may not react...good luck!

Oven cleaner is safe on fiberglass. I recently used it to remove all the decals and striping on my 270 dancer. The painted name on the transom was a different story though. The oven cleaner did not really work at all. Instead, I used red rubbing compound (alot of it), and it did work. Time consuming and tough on the hands but it worked.
