Need Help With Too Small Trim Tabs

Larry,

Note in the Catalog (link below) that shy of the custom actuators in stainless, Bennett only makes one actuator.

http://www.bennetttrimtabs.com/pdf/bennett_catalog.pdf

Also, the tabs you are looking at are too small for a 330 based on Bennett's own sizing chart.

True, the fin in your picture will provide some lift and add to slow speed tracking, however, the fin alone will not provide the lift that exists in the Bennett sport tab. Much of that lift comes from the "up angle" diversion from the horizontal plane itself then having the water forced down the fin. That action provides a theoritical 30% extra tab area. That is from Bennett, not me.

You may want to ping some of the members who have larger boats and see what they have for trim tabs. My friend has a 36 Dancer and his tabs are much larger than my originals in width and he is running a 12 inch chord. He is only running one actuator per tab.

I understand the issue with top pressure. The lanyard is a good idea even on normal size tabs. It is extremely rare, but not unheard of to have a tab rip loose and trash a prop regardless of tab size and like the man said; "If it's gonna happen, it's gonna happen out there."

Good Luck with whatever you decide.

I have an 02 340 Dancer that had the same tab issue. I installed a set of 02 340 trim tabs that were made to fit a Diesel that Searay uses on this model.

Now I can tab and even tilt the boat to Starboard or port. The original tabs are useless. I used the same cylinders and they work great. Under way I can tab and put the bow up and down with ease.

100% cure for the factory error.

Just curious. What size are they?

Not sure of size as boat is presently stored for the winter. I got the part number from the parts book that came with the boat. Suggest calling Searay as they would have the size.

I havn't read the entire thread so forgive me if I reply in error. For the record I have 2003 340 dancer with 6.2L and have been trying to get the bow down using the tabs for a long time without any success. The reason for this is because the boat was porpoising (pushing water and not plaining sufficiently). I resolved this and alot of other problems (poor idle speed handling/lower rpm for cruise/better gas) by changing the factory selected hytorq 17X19 3 blade wheels to a set of michigan 18x19 4 blade DQX wheels. Interestingly the boat shoots out of and over the hole and i can do whatever I want with the tabs. If it's another tab problem or something with Bennett disregard.

Re: fuel consumption query.sundancer 330
Hello Melida. How are things in Turkey?

Glad we can get together to help another SR owner!

Larry,

PowerPoint slide as promised. Hopefully with Melida's pictures and the slide, you will get an idea of what my tabs look like. The angles are cut and sharp edges ground down, merely to avoid any cutting hazards.

You can practice on some construction paper from a craft shop to get comfortable. My welder has been in business for over 20 years and boating his whole life. I gave him the design and he ran with it.

Good luck and please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
