So, I am cosidering the purchase of a 1987 250 Sundancer. The boat is located in MI...I want to take it next summer to Erie. It has a 454 in it , rebuilt in 2003. assuming all is well with the boat, waht would my issues be? It looks like a 300 mile trip....hugging the coast line. If I plan on 25 mph, it seems like I could take two or three days and complete the trip without issue.
Am I missing something. My last boat by the way was a 22' sailboat. Also...any idea of gas range or gallons per hour or?

Any help or thoughts would be thanked!

I would estimate 2 1/2 mpg, or a little less. What is that, a 70 gallon tank? Plan on getting gas every 100 miles or so, to be safe. Use the boat several times before that to make sure everything is operating as advertised. Keep a port in mind. Check the weather in advance each day, and keep updating it. Don't push it. Those lakes can get nasty, I understand.

Last but not least, leave yourself plenty of back-up days so you don't get yourself in a tight spot. Oh yeah - make sure your safety gear is in good order including VHF radio.

The 87 250 is a great boat! I'd say under 2 mph, but that can vary depending on the load, seas and other factors. As mentioned, take it on some shorter trips and make sure everything is well. I'm guessing it still has the Alpha I drive which will last a long time as long as you don't firewall the throttle from a dead start very often. Just ease into it and it will last a lot longer. Of course, we'll need to see pictures of the boat!!

Bohica,

Welcome! I keep my boat in Erie, on the Canuck side in Leamington. If you are looking for a cruising buddy to do the trip with, let me know, I'd be happy to tag along with my tub to ensure that all goes smoothly. I can trailer it to Sarnia/Port Huron and take the cruise through the St Clair and Detroit Rivers. Wanted to do that trip next year anyway. You will have to keep the throttle in check for me though! I am working with a bigger/heavier boat with a SB!

Welcome again, and looking forward to some pics of the new ride!

Cheers,

Randy.

I have a carbuerated 330hp 454ci in my 93 270 WE which is about 5400 lbs dry. I get about 2 MPG at 3000 RPM which is a good cruise at about 28-30 knots. Keeping your drive trimmed properly helps MPG too.
