We having been taking week long trips to Norris Lake in Tenn the past few years and have been loving it. This year I would like to try and hook up with a friend that lives in Jacksonville, FL. With that in mind I was thinking about going a little further south and east to get a little closer to them so their trip wouldn't be quite so long. Keep in mind that we live in Northern KY just south of Cincinnati. I have been driving 4.5 hours to get to Norris (half of the trip was not on expressways).

We would be looking for a lake that has house for rent right on the water. Nice size lakes if possible.

Any suggestions?

From greater Cincinnati, you are about six hours to Lake Norman and seven hours to Lake Wylie which are both in the Charlotte area right off the I-77 Corridor. You could head a bit further south to Lake Murray in Columbia. It's another hour and half further down I-77 probably making your total trip 8-9 hours. One of those lakes would probably be "midpoint" for both you and your friend in Jacksonville. Norman is a huge lake but very crowded on the weekends. Lake Murray is very big also and decidely less crowded. Wylie is the smallest of the bunch and that's where I boat. I would assume houses are available to rent on all three but you probably need to contact a realator or rental agent in those areas to find them. And they all are close enough to major cities so that you can find plenty of restaurants, hotels, and other attractions as well. Let me know if you want any information on any of these lakes.

Dave,
thanks for the reply. Since we go for a week usually the weekend days are spent traveling to/from and the boating occurs Monday-Friday so I hope the crowd wouldn't be much of a problem. I will start searching for real estate agents for rentals on those lakes. Our boat show starts this weekend, so maybe somebody will be there to assist me!

Wish,

Try a search on rentals on lake murray or vacations homes for rent on lake murray or some other combination. Mr. Sbolts may be of some assistance here.

Lake Murray is about 50,000 acres, no real shallow spots. You will normally see depths from 25 ft - over 100 ft. The lake is about 45 miles long and 5 miles wide at its widest point. There are a couple of nice marinas on the lake and a few restaurants. You will have the lake to yourself during the week and even during the weekends traffic is not too bad.

FYI,

The lake is now near full pool and it is raining now, so low levels do not appear to be a problem here.
