Nater Potater's Build Thread

I keep watching the interior remodels and I sat in ours the other night hiding. All I could think of is the things I should update too. I need to stop following the remodels and put my pennies in the jar for a radar and windless. My wife is, beyond done with pulling anchor.
Lucky fellow. My wife says ,"lets move" and sits down.

Glad you didn't burn up anything.
Well the shift cable job didn't go well. I did something wrong. Not wrong, wrong. REALLY wrong. Everything went along per Nater's instructions. I oiled each cable a bit at a time over 3 days. Each time working the throttles back and forth to their max WOT. Everything seemed to be ok. Put it back together today and fired it up. Well holy Shucks, good thing I was tied down well. The boat shot forward and headed for the parking lot. Like I said, good thing I was tied good and cocktail hour had not started. I quickly reversed and shut down. Somehow ( I think) during my shifting back and forth while oiling, I locked it In forward. My next post will probably be about how well my mechanic did replacing both cables.

Yikes! Hopefully, no one got hurt, or worse; no one got video of it. Which Merc manual were you using for cable setup? I use Service Manual #14, starting on page 2A-13. PM me if you can't find it, and I'll shoot a copy your way.

I followed your instructions and they were perfect. I think what I did was, when shifting the throttles back and forth, I pushed the starboard one too far forward and the handle was not properly re-aligned when I put everything back together. While semi-sleeping last night I remembered it seeming to go really far forward and locking. While hold the unit against my body, it took a lot of pressure to get it loose. Gonna loosen the handle and check. I spoke with my mechanic the other day (prior to knowing of my screw up) and he said he could change the cables while in the water. It would take one day. I was going to have them done next spring so thing I'll get them done now. I will just get all of my "Honey Do's" taken care of and maybe the first mate will "lend" me the funds. I'll keep you posted. And you're right. Thank god no video around. I don't want to "idiot" YouTube.:eek:

'Not a lot to report this evening. I finished the new shift cable install and got everything adjust, then filled the outdrives with oil. New thermostats arrived in the mail. There's still a question with water flow from the port engine, as I remember the flow from the prop hub being noticeably less than the starboard engine. That was also the reason for pulling the risers earlier. There's still the trim switches to install and adjust. Tomorrow evening's tied up, so I hope to be able to light the engines on Wednesday. Assuming things go well, we'll splash Thursday afternoon.

I have more out the prop on my starboard than port. But more out the exhaust holes in the gimble mount on that side.

Where do you boat at? Arrowrock, Lucky Peak? or Snake river?
I don't remember any ramps at Arrowrock however.

We'll do our testing in Lucky Peak, then it's back up north to Pend Oreille. We have one outing planned for September to run the Snake from Lewiston down to the Tri-Cities, so that's been the big push to get this thing seaworthy. There are ramps at Arrowrock, but I don't think I could maneuver the roads with this big of a boat. Have you spent much time in the Treasure Valley? You're obviously familiar with the local waterways.

I grew up in Boise. I had a place in McCall up until a couple of years ago; sold it as I hardly ever went there.
Lake Pend Oreille is quite the haul if you are in the Treasure Valley!
Payette Lake is also great but not that big!

There is a couple ramps. One on the North end. Go up the north end of Lucky, up around the Arrow Rock dam, up the hill and through the tight cut in the rock and wall face. Then just another 5 miles.

One you get to from the Mountain Home side and its only about 60 miles on washboard roads. And there is one on the south side. It's more of a pick up slide into the lake.

Not an ugly part of those lakes. Spent many a miles out there looking for hunting camps.

Trim switches and senders were installed and adjusted Wednesday evening. There's still the concern about the odd water flow seen out of the prop hub while on the cuff. There was a note found from years ago from a couple of owners back about cooling issues. The one time we were able to run the boat last year, the exhaust manifolds were pretty hot to the touch. That was part reason I decided to pull the exhaust risers earlier. Based on everything seen, I had this gut feeling that they'd pulled the thermostat. So, guess what:

Yep, no t'stat down there. So, off with six hoses and some very hard gaskets. After a couple of hours of chiseling and wire brushing, the new t'stat is in where it belongs. STILL haven't fired the engines, and my window of opportunity's rapidly closing. I really had hoped to take it out tomorrow afternoon to try to beat the weekend crowd. Maybe Monday afternoon...

She lives! The engines fired right up (as expected), and the outdrives shift well. There'll need to be a bit of adjustment for the port reverse, but nothing out of the ordinary. And yet, I still question the exhaust manifolds. The risers are nice and cool, but the manifolds themselves get pretty warm when running on the hard, and I still don't see water flow out of either prop hub like I would expect. The exhaust ports on the transom plates poop out a fair amount, yet barely a trickle from the props. Did I put the wrong gaskets in under the risers? Trying to decipher which style has been difficult at best. The items I put in have two large slits along the sides, with two small (1/4") holes front/back. I based that by the fact that that's what was in there when I pulled the risers. Granted, they were probably installed by the same yo-yo that left the thermostats out...
The style that went back in:

Since the window of opportunity has temporarily passed, I decided to order up the third alternate, seen below:

We'll have them Monday, so I have a couple of days to focus on the generator.

It looks like you are replacing restrictor gaskets with the 4 slots. Didn't notice in previous pics, but do you have the 3" spacers? Here is a Mercruiser bulletin on selecting the correct riser gaskets if you haven't seen it.
