I am just wondering if some one can tell me what part this is? I have a Mercruiser 3.0 XL engine with a Alpha I Digital Electronic Ignition System.

If you are looking out the back of the boat it is located on the left side near the back close to the hull? It seems to be rusted and i wanted to know what it was to see if i needed to replace it?
Can any one help?

Should i replace it? It works well, but just is rusted?

I would not replace it just yet if it works fine. I would make sure you do not have a leak dripping water on it causing it to rust. Disconnect your battery and then clean the terminals on the starter as they may have some corrosion as well. Perhaps some light sanding and a few shots of high temperature paint is in order. Do not disregard my advice to disconnect battery before messing with your starter as it is direct wired to the battery and will bite you hard if you are not careful....I have had DC battery current take a large chunk out of a wrench before.

Cool, ill do that. Can you suggest the paint i should use? I should take off the black cable first right? Like a car

Painted an ATV exhaust a few months back with this and it is holding up well. Disconnect Neg first is fine.
