My Sandy Story

Vince...
God no... I don't want the same exact boat! I'd take mine back but the same one...nope!

Ken...
I have $4500 coverage for personal stuff, separate and above the insured value. Check your policy. Should be on there.

Vandal...
I've been on a couple of boats that floated off the blocks with plugs off in the marina out and they were fine inside. There may have been a well-confined 8" of water that had receded fully but the time the boat was righted. Small sampling, though. It would take an 8' surge to float my boat. One guy stayed on his boat in the water and he said it came in fast and somewhat furiously.

Speaking about personal property, do you think my dock box and contents are covered. Here's what they pulled out of the water ( what's left of it)

Your policy will exactly specify how much personal property coverage you have, pull it out to see. It is also a good time to suggest we all evaluate what we have on board both in electronics and personal gear (On my policy they are separate) to ensure we have enough coverage.

Ron, the most valuable thing on your boat are the two full fuel tanks. It is a ashame you did not put here away empty. I can give a very good deal on my 190 Sundeck if youi just want a boat to get out for a ride...

I wonder what will happen to Green Cove after the dust settles? Their insurance cost will go through the roof, not mention the lost customers. The complexity of liability between the marina, crane owner, and boat owners may casue some long drawn out law suites.

I know that the boating is a way of life for you, starting back as a child in Long Island. Even though you have college to save for, and your time is occupied with family activities, band gigs and work, I deeply hope you will get another boat. We need you on the bay as our ring leader, cruise/party planner, and all around nice guy. Let your CSR friends help you find your next boat. The connections, and smarts of the people on this site would be IMO the best way to find your next boat.

It was sad what happened to your boat, but don't let this storm kill your summers on the water...

Thanks Rod. First of all, everyone around here and on the bay will do just fine without me! I don't plan to get out of boating forever - maybe just for a season. Even if my boat is reparable, I doubt she'll be ready to go for Summer 2013, depending on the damage (I still don't know the extent). There's going to be a waiting list just to get a mechanic on your boat, and they're all going to be in a hurry to get on to the next repair.

If I need to find a replacement boat, it will be difficult to buy with confidence - every tri-state-area boat for sale could be tainted - how can you know for sure? Might need to shop out of state and the supply may be slim pick'ns.

Boating on the bay will probably be treacherous this summer - dock boxes, BBQs, sofas, refrigerators, pilings, decking, chunks of homes - some submerged, some floating.

I believe my marina will be fine. They will get plenty of refugees from marinas that were more badly damaged. Our "docks" are actually land masses, and the storm didn't wash the land away. Slips will probably be very hard to procure for next summer. Flip side is that the number of boats needing slips will decrease with all the "totaled" boats leaving the waters.

Who knows what the future holds. It's all speculation and conjecture. Time will tell...

Thanks Rick. Might take you up on that (minus the taking it out myself)!

A few of the marinas near me [seaford, ny] have already said they will not repoen. will be an interesting next season. I went out for a ride sunday and TONS of debris in the water. also almost no place to get fuel. Dani-Lu advised of a marina in Babylon who is open albeit no phones..
buoys on land and not in the channel anymore bacause there wasnt enough slack to handle the surge..

scary stuff..
Ron

Hey ron how's the waters out there have the bars or channels changed or atleast that you noticed.

The other ron I'm very sorry about your boat. I really hope to c you this coming year at the csr get together. Burst of luck to you

Ron, I like many others have been following your story. I am truly very sorry for all the hardship you and all the others on the coast have suffered. I'm sure this takes some wind out of your sails when thinking about boating, but I'm sure with time your excitement, and the right boat will be there waiting for you. If you ever make it to SW Michigan you are welcome to take my boat out anytime!!!

Shaun & Doc...I know I speak for everyone around these parts when I say thanks for your thoughts. The people with the real problems are those who lived right along the coastlines, from the Delaware beaches all the way up through the Jersey Shore, Barnegat Bay, NY harbor, Raritan Bay, Queens, the south shore of Long Island and all the coastline of the LI Sound - they are truly suffering. I'm just cranky right now, but my issues are nothing in comparison.

Jonathan, hope to see you and YOUR boat again real soon too!

Appreciate everyone's well wishes - it really does mean a lot. Good to know I have keys to all these cool SRs in different parts of the country. Kinda like a boat time-share ;-)

I also know where there is a 480DB that doesn't need no stinkin' keys. And the owner is too busy working to use it. There is a story going around that a homeless guy was able to move into the boat for several months before being discovered, so I am sure you could use it and put it back and no one would be the wiser...

Ron - I'll even throw in the keys to a 52' Motor Yacht. All you gotta do is come to California. There's room for you and your family and even if you didn't go out it's a pretty nice free hotel.

Hi Ron sorry to hear what you are going through as well as so many others, last year I lost my boat in a big marina fire 75 boats in total. Dealing with the insurance company was a pain but the payout was quick and we learned some lessons the hard way. If you know your covered start looking now if you are able for another boat as after the fire last year the sales around the Great Lakes definitely increased and early bird got the worm.
Here is a picture from our marina taking at 5AM when we here in Sarnia were taking the brunt of your leftovers, nothing like the damage you guys sustained but enough to cause lots of damage.
My wife works for the local hydro company and worked at night to help man the phones because of so many downed power lines and unfortunately one of the lineman was killed in the morning trying to restore power to the thousands that were without it.
These gazebos were just installed this summer, they were there on the many trips down to the boat to keep things secure but when I returned in the morning were all wiped out.
Like I said nothing like the hell you guys are going through but amazing how big this storm was.

Hi Ron,

I'm a little late responding here but I have been following, even when I was out of power for 11 days. I am truly sorry to see what happened to your boat as well as all of the other CSR members who endured a loss. It sucks that you already have discounted next season too. I wish you the best in dealing with this situation. I hope the insurance company is fair to you. Good luck my friend.
