A family dog killed a toddler at 2700 state Route 12B in the Oneida County Town of Marshall.
Sheriff Robert M. Maciol says Lisa M. Cittadino, age 32, called 911, Sunday saying that her 11-month old son had just been attacked by the family dog and she was attempting to render first-aid.
Cittadino said the family dog, a 2-year-old pit-bull named Diesel, was in the living room playing with her three daughters, ages 12, 10 and 7 and the 11-month old son when the dog attacked.
Cittadino stated that her back was to the children when she heard her son screaming along with her daughters and turned around to see Diesel was attacking her son.
She said she frantically tried to get the dog to release its grip. Once she was finally able to do that, she secured the dog, Maciol said.
The boy was immediately taken by Oriskany Falls Ambulance to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Utica, NY where he died as a result of injuries to his neck and face.
The dog was taken into custody by the Town of Verona Animal Control Officer and is going to be euthanized at the request of the family. Cittadino stated that there have been no previous issues with the dog being aggressive with the children over the past 2 years that they The children said the boy was near the dog’s food dish and that may have precipitated the attack.
The Onondaga County Medical Examiner’s Office was notified and an autopsy of the toddler will be conducted.
The family has been offered counseling.
