My marina is testing new dock bubblers

I went to my marina today and my slip and a few others slips have dock bubblers . So i guess this means i'll get to leave my tug in the water all year. :smt038, There was no ice around my slip from about 45ft away. :smt001.

I have a dock bubbler - it works pretty good. Mine sits on a timer with a thermostat. If you get a few going it will keep a pretty good area clear.

From what i saw half of the marina was ice free. I was told by a worker that these are some kind of newly designed bubblers that are in the testing stage.. I hope they work out. I love sleeping on the water. :smt001

Hope your boat has heat. . . .

. . .also, if you are wintering at the slip; expect a suitably LARGE bill "in water winter storage". I would expect it to be much larger than a bill for land based storage.

Or a disclaimer stating they can shut the system off at any time.

I pay $378 for winter storage now. So how much more could it be if the new bubblers work out??. Yes i do have heat on the tug. :smt001

What happens when the ice goes out in the spring time? Moving ice can be distructive.
What does your insurance contract say about when the boat must be laid up?

when the boat must be laid up?
Good point on bringing that up. I'll call my insurance gal tomorrow to find out about that legal crap for this.. :smt021

Policies do vary. For example, I do not have a specified layup period in my policy. Your milage -and policy- may be different.

What is the Marina's backup plan in the event of a power outage?

If they plan on using generators, how much fuel do they have onsite and how long will that keep the bubblers running?

Personally, why risk it? Lay the boat up in the fall, store it inside, and launch in the spring. Plus there is the added benefit of the UV not hitting the boat for 5-6 months out of the year.

Hey wayne's world, my stepdad has kept his boat in the water all winter many times on your lake and at onondaga lake yacht club and at pirates cove on the river and the first year he did it he had to build a stainless tank for the heater because the water was so cold he could only get to about 60 degrees in the cabin ,with it no problem, I don't know exactly what the electric bill was for the winter but it was a hell off a lot more than 4 or 5 boats winter storage. He also lived on the boat so he was there everyday checking on everything. It is not as easy as you might think esp. in upstate ny as you and me know it. The first time my wife met my mom was in the middle of winter and when i took her to pirates cove marina she thought i was nuts. I had to shovel a foot of snow off the dock. ps saftey lines on both sides of dock in case of slipping into water/ice

Well, My insurance company said, I CAN'T keep my boat in the water all year. :smt089. Its got to be stored on land for the winter layup months... twomad, I know those places very well.
