My Erie Canal / 1000 Islands Trip

Here are some transit times I got when we made the trip, not sure where I got them, maybe the nyscanals site?

I would say that from Watertown to Oswego is about 5 days or so at 4-5 hours a day.

Ken,
We stopped at Ed Huck Marine to check into customs, when we got to Canada. Turns out all we had to do was use the phone booth out back.

Yes, that sounds about right. You can also call them from your cell phone ... that phone booth can get extremely hot at times.

Thank you guys, this gone help for sure, I started working on this project 2 weeks ago and the info I had so far is that this trip is a real good one to make so if everything goes well I should be on my way by the end of July. I had good info too from the NYCANAL.COM forum and my next step will be to buy that book call the (The Cruising Guide to the New York State Canal System - 3RD Edition) cause of what I heard from many folks , this is a must before travelling on those canals.
Thanks again, really appreciate this.

I travel the NYS Canal all the time its the only way I can get off the lake.

Give me a shout when you get to Oneida Lake. :smt001

Wayne,
do we have to make any reservation to spend a night in Oneida Lake or there is enough room on the canal's wall.
Knowing that you spend time on the canal, I had a few info from somebody on an other forum who told me that I should plan 7 days from Waterford to Oswego an another told me 3 days. by looking at a few charts and from the info that Greg send to me I think 5 days like He said is really close to reality,
Right now I try to be as close as I can on my planning,
Thankyou

No you don't it a first come first serve, If theres no room on the canal walls.

You guys can stay at my marina for free as my guest.

I would plan for 6 days Oneida Lake can get real nasty at times. :wow:

PS, They also time you from one lock to the other so don't speed or you'll get a a$$ chewing.

Bruno,
We went through in '09, Waterford to North Tonawanda, here's some notes from the log:
Waterford to Canojoharie wall-7 hours, 58 miles.
Canojoharie to Lock 20 Canalside Park- 8 hours, 46 miles. we stopped at St Johnsville Marina for gas which is just west of Canojoharie.
Lock 20 to Baldwinsville- 7 hours, 69 miles. Baldwinsville is about an hour past Three Rivers, so you won't have to go quite as far.
On another trip, we went Three Rivers to Oswego in a day.
We did most of our cruising at 7 to 8 mph because our wake is too much at the speed limit of 10, (and 10 mph isn't very efficient for us) Figure you can spend anywhere from half hour to an hour at each lock. However, once you clear a lock, the lockmaster will call ahead to the next lock, and if traffic allows, they will have the gates open for you when you get there. Add a little time for weather, and I would say 6 to 7 days, traveling 4 or 5 hours a day.
Enjoy

Oneida wasn't bad on our trip, Lake Ontario on the other hand... You may want to allow a couple days there too. We left early in the morning, and it still kicked up pretty good.

I just went back through my pics, We left Waterford somewhere around 11:00am on August 16th, and arrived in Oswego, past the last lock, at about 6:00 pm on August 19th. Thats 4 days, and we did a lot more than 4-5 hours a day, maybe ~7. Although we did lose a day at Sylvan beach, and a half a day or so when I met up with my parents.

And yes, they do time you between locks. :smt021

Greg, Did you get the world FAMOUS NYS canal a$$ chewing for speeding ??.

I wonder how hard it would be to remove the hard top?
Greg, it's a piece of cake. All it takes is a crew of 6-7, a big fork lift and a trailer to set it on after it's removed. :smt038

Great photos of your trip. Thanks a lot for sharing. It's always fun to see the journeys that people take in other parts of the country.

BTW, once you are inside the locks, what do you tie to? Out here, in the Corps of Engineers locks they have floating bollards that we tie up to. The locks here raise an average of around 95' so they need something that can go up and down as the water level changes.

Each bollard has two different places to tie up. The top one for bigger boats then there is one down lower for smaller boats. They are about 6' in diameter and 8' tall and run up and down in the tracks that you can see that are built into the walls of the lock.

Thanks again for sharing the pics. I appreciate that you took the time to post them.

Wayne,
knowing that you're from Oneida Lake, is this lake a good place if I want to spend like 4-5 days going around and relax, is there nice spot for anchoring, cause that what we like, fishing, swimming and all that good stuff. I really like to spend nights when I can have a nice spot for anchoring. Is there any places where people living on this lake don't want see any boats anchored in their bay like we see sometimes on some lake in Canada.
Thank you

There are many coves you can use and yes you can stay anywhere you want to on the lake. :smt038
You would love it at 3 Mile Bay up by Brewerton . :smt001

Thank you so much for this info , really appreciate this, maybe next summer will be able to have a beer, or two, or maybe three, bof ,we should go for four than,
