I own a 1979 260 Sundancer with OMC 800 drive. I am frustrated with the muff style flusher. Even the pro style allows most of the water to flush past the rubber cups and OD housing. I get marginal improvement if I manually squeeze them together. 25 years ago I saw an all metal type with a hose connection that clamped onto the OD. I can't find that any where. Is there a better style out there than the rubber cup muffs?

Are you trying ot get ALL of the water from the hose into the motor? If so, why? The lower unit will suck in as much water as it needs, and the rest will physically not fit into the motor. Not sure of the capactiry of the cooling system, but I doubt it's very much. A typical Chevy 350 will hold 4.5 gallons in the entire system, which includes the radiator (where most of the coolant is). In an open system, once the engine wills up with water, it can't take anymore in until some of it flushes out. With the thermostat closed, very little will come out until it gets hot and opens. Either way, your hose will most likely have water coming out faster than it is being released from the engine, thus causing the excess to 'bypass' the lower unit altogether.

I am truly surprised that you have not received more responses/advice on the subject of muffs…

I do think the Aggie is on the right track, unless of course you are getting a high-temp alarm, or are burning up impellers while on the hose.

The water pumps in these engines do not need preasure, more importantly they want volume. The water needs to bleed out as not to damage the pumps, if you were to force all the preasure in the hose into the motor I would think you could damage the pump.
