I just bought a set of water muffs and connected them to the outdrive in hopes of starting the engine. I installed them and connected to a garden hose. Started the boat but I did not notice any water coming out through the props. So I immediately turned off the engine. The boat was winterized and I drained all of the anti-freeze earlier. New to this, did I do something wrong or does it have to run for awhile before water comes out of the exhaust?

Did you drain the block? Might take a second or two to run through the engine.

I did drain the block. Maybe I didn't give it enough time???

it doesn't come out of the prop - there are ports in the transom assembly on each side of the drive

Thanks for the info. I assumed it came out with the exhaust.

A tiny bit will come out with the exhaust, but most will pour out the two holes in the gimbal housing as mentioned above.

What type of muffs did you use? http://clubsearay.com/forum/showthread.php?t=29128

Are you sure they stayed on?

Unless normal, "car" antifreeze was used, for future reference, there's no need to drain the pink antifreeze out of the block.

I bought the ones by Mercruiser. These are the ones that have the metal rod that goes through the sterndrive. I drained the anit freeze so that I could replace the impeller on the raw water pump.

As everyone said it will take awhile if the system was drained.

Also, the Bravo 3 water pump does not put out much volume at idle. After the hose has been running for a minute or two, rev the engine momentarily once or twice and that will help to move the water along.

Thanks all. Just paranoid about running the engine out of the water.

If you already run it dry a while and now are concerned with doing it again just pull a hose or drain plug up by the thermostat housing and fill it up first. The last time I changed impellers I had a similar problem. It wouldn't pull water through. I think the muffs were leaking too much.

Good - glad you got the better kind.

Sounds like you did everything right - enjoy the season!

One other thing on the Bravo III - there is probably a low water pick up on the bottom of the nose cone (front of the drive). If you dont buy the flush cover they sell (its a quicksilver part) you will get alot of water coming right out of that hole and less running through the block.

I think somebody said this the other day about this low water pickup. I have a 2003 BIII and have never noticed water coming out the front. Is on the newer units?

"Wiosh2fish" Said "low water pick up on the bottom of the nose cone" So i guess that is an input. I never noticed that on my 98 Bravo-3 while I was painting the drive last year. Will have to look again. Great, Something else to check for blockage. JG

Shinsr... out of curiosity, how many Bravo III's have you seen the low water pick-up on? I'm not saying they're not out there, but this is traditionally something that would be special ordered for use with a Bravo I drive on a go-fast boat. In fact, it's so "uncommon" on B3's, I wouldn't even think to mention it to someone.
