Mounting Dinghy system

The 4" extention got me safely beond my grab rails I added to the platform and the 4" down was the line up point for the davits on the dingy.

ajones:

I'm getting close to the davit install. Do you remember the size of your standoffs?

thanks,

Dominic,
Sorry for the late reply, I have 60" standoffs on my boat.

Thanks for getting back.....

A thought just came into my head.....I know...I know....anyway....since I have a 2 stroke, and it can be stored upside down, do I even need to mount a swivel......???? I mean, couldn't I just leave the motor where it is and lift the dink???? I only use the external gas tank....I don't use the internal.....I would run the carb dry before lifting.....just a thought.... :smt017

I guess theoretically you can, however with the swivel mount the weight of the motor is transferred to a higher position and will create much less of a spring in the dingy. Just my two cents....

You should also factor how much the outboard will bounce or swing when under way with it stowed in that position. I believe that's another reason why Weaver suggests the arc bracket bolted to the transon instead of just a pad glued to the pontoon. It better controls the stability of the transom of the dinghy when upright. The last thing you want when the going gets rough is to have the outboard start flailing around wrecking both the dinghy and the swim platform...

While you "can" stow a 2-stroke in nearly any orientation they do inevitably leak something. I've stowed my 9.9hp in a duffel (XL size Eagle Creek from REI) this past season and even when I run it dry to remove the gasoline it still manages to ooze a bit of gunk into the bag. Thus the reason I keep an oil absorbent pad lining the bottom of the duffel.

Alan,

I have the Weaver Davit system but haven't installed it yet. I'm thinking of adding standoffs similar to yours, but am concerned about running with the dinghy in the upright position...do you lay it against the transom when under way, or is the standoff system secure enough to allow you to run on plane with it upright? And if you don't mind my asking, how much were the 60" standoffs? Weaver doesn;t have a price on their website.

Also, how difficult is it to install the pads? Did you do it yourself? A local shop wants $375 just to install the pads....

Thanks!
Jeff

Jeff,

I used the 36" standoff bars and I am very happy with them. The dinghy rides at a 5-10 degree angle. The pads are very easy to install yourself. I am not the handy man that you see on these other posts and had no trouble installing to pads. Just follow the directions closely.

I have yet to mount my 4HP outboard and am not sure how I am going to. On my previous boat I had a motor bracket on the transom. It worked great but was to unsightly for a Sea Ray transom.

Hope this helps.

Finally getting around to posting pics of the Hurley Davits on my 300. I’ve had them on for about 2 months now and am very satisfied with this system. The boat has no problem running with the dingy and engine mounted and the ease of loading and launching couldn’t be easier.

Thanks, Scott! Sounds like installing the pads myself is the way to go. Right now the outboard rides in the cockpit but I'd like to find a better way, too.

I agree...this is how the previous owner of my 380DA tranported his dinghy engine.....it worked great, but it sure was unsightly....especially when the motor wasn't on the bracket and all that was showing was the bracket.....admiral had me remove it ASAP .....

If you need some info, let me know.

Just wondering...How can the Weaver system be "legal" for documented vessels when the vessel must be clearly visible from astern? Appears the dingy hides the name quite effectively.

Many folks will have their vessel name and port of call put on (painted, vinyle, etc) the bottom of the dinghy hull for that very reason.

You have to also be concerned about obstructing your stern light if the stern light is mounted in the transom and will be blocked by the dinghy. This is an issue with the Weaver type davits and also all of the pull on type davits. A work around for that situation is to mount your stern light high up on the existing nav light pole.

I am considering the davit system; I like the idea of not removing the outboard all the time. I have few questions. First off I have a 10 ft Zodiac Yachtline RIB with 15hp behind a 2000, 34DA. My question is does the dinghy or the motor get disrupted by the wake or white wash? Anyone have any issues while getting up on plane or in rough water? My concerns are; dinghy getting damaged because ½ of it is beyond the platform? Rough water affects etc. Can you guys with experience with these systems please clarify?
Thanks!
