We had some post on SRO about Dinghy davits/carrying systems

I have the plan to make the system that is in the photos.

Does somebody have this system?

And if you got it, does it work fine?

Anybody have tips how to mount etc.?

Thanks Peter.

Hmmm ... never seen this, but why mess with this contraption and have this stuff mounted on the platform when you can get weavers snap davits :smt017

There are several reasons for me,

- I can make it myself.
- It's a simple system to dismount from the platform.
- It is cheap to make it.
- When dismounted you only have 2 little mounting blocks.( I make the mounting round shaped)
- You can make it in white.
- You don't have to take off your outboard motor
- I don't like the look of weaver
- I can't buy Weaver in the Netherlands.

Peter

In the photo you see the same system with transport wheel’s on it.

Peter,

You may want to check out http://www.hurleymarine.com/, the owner of the company was a member of SRO if I am not mistaken. Looked very similar to what you are looking at. A couple people that had it always talked positive about it on the board. If you decide to go that way. I think some of the others go a different way but I am sure they will chime in if others have something that works just as good for a lot cheaper....(oh Frank)....

Thanks Wesley,

I had the dinghy ramp product idea from SRO.
I read a post I believe it was from 370Dancer..
In the same post also somebody was very positive about the Hurleymarine product.

I think the idea is the same, the thing that I want is to make it from "easy" material what is light.

I make it a little winter project.

Peter I'm going to get Ken to post here. He has just installed the Hurley Davit on his Regal. :smt001

Ok thanks Richard,

I like to know what his experience is.

Thanks a lot!

Peter,

As Stihlbolts mentioned, I recently installed the Hurley system and conceptually the idea works for all the reasons that you refer to above. I also agree that you could make your own brackets.

This type of system enables you to run with the dinghy horizontal with the motor still mounted on the dinghy. The brackets extend beyond the platform allowing for a virtual larger platform (my platform is 36"). My boat has no problem running with this configuration, but I am running with a lightweight dinghy and motor weighing less than 100 lbs.

Here are some pictures of my installation:

Thanks very much Ken for the photos! This help’s a lot!

I'm also planning a dingy project for this winter, and this system is what I want.

I have a few questions.

1. What are the brackets sizes? (Total, first half, second half, in between etc.)
2. Did you solve the problem that the crossbar is swinging down?
3. What did you use for mounting the bolds under you swim platform?

I hope you understand what I mean my (technical) English is not so good.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Peter.

1. What are the brackets sizes? (Total, first half, second half, in between etc.)

I used 10" brackets. Different size swim platforms will requre different length brackets for proper set up. There is a formula on the Hurley site to size the brackets for their system. Basically you take 1/2 the width of the dinghy and add 4 inches to determine if your swim platform is wide enough to the pivot point. Mine needed a longer bracket to get beyond the platform hand rails. The davit platform is 36" wide by 40" long. You may need to mount your system brackets off center a little in order to have the platform more towards the dinghy motor for best support.

2. Did you solve the problem that the crossbar is swinging down?

Not yet --it could be as simple as adding a bushing to the hinge point, or a small weight on the bar. The platform almost stays in place by itself.

3. What did you use for mounting the bolds under you swim platform?

Large stainless fender washers were fine for my installation. I think they were about 2 or 2 1/2 inches wide.

The above pictures don't show how I lash the dinghy down. As you can imagine, having the dinghy properly lashed down is important on a planing cruiser. I use four rachet type straps: two going straight down to the pop-up cleats at the swim platform edges, and two going to those transom grab rails.

I knew Frank would comment about the toe stubbers!! The brackets are no problem for my size 15 feet, and Teresa can even trip on the non-skid texture --hehe...

I've got one just like her......... if there is a single stone in the 10 acre Walmart parking lot, guess who is going to trip on it...........!

I live with the New Jersey model.....

Thanks Ken for your information!!!

I think I can do with the 6"brackets.

Frank's toe stubbers remark: That's the main reason why I want to make round shaped mounting blocks/brackets.

Ken, can you tell me (in % or in inch) on which length on the davit platform (40") the pivot point is?

Yes that was my idea also: to mount the system brackets off centre a little in order to have the platform more towards the dinghy motor.

Thanks again that you help me!

Peter.

Thank the Lord that none of them read these forums......ot it would be a long cold winter!

Watch out!!!

If you guys don't give me a lot of info I find a way to tell them

Ken, can you tell me (in % or in inch) on which length on the davit platform (40") the pivot point is?

The pivot point is 22" from the trailing edge, 18" from the rounded front (towards the transom). If you hold the pivot point in your hands, the weight bias is slightly to the trailing edge.
