Month Long Cruise through New England - Four Suns

Hi Gary,
If your stuck in AC for another day, you may want to move north about 20 miles to Beach Haven, Nice town area, four block walk to beach, diesel at $4.30 per gallon. Shelter Harbor is the best place to stay (609.492.8645). Pool and two hot tubs, no jitneys to deal with....good places to eat. Two routes too (ocean or bay).
AC is only good for about a day if your not gambling or drinking.

Enjoy the trip (are you stopping in Mystic Seaport??)
Ed

We are going to do a long run tomorrow up the coast and get into CT somewhere. If the crew is holding up, I may try to get to Newport, RI. Not sure of the stop... It'll probably be around Mystic though but I just want something nice for a good dinner and a quick overnight stay and a boat load of fuel. I'll be booking out early Wed to Martha's Vineyard.

I worked on my bridge today so it's ok being here for another day. My Sea Ray Systems Monitor gave me a data fault and I've tracked it down to a bad coax splice/connection under the helm but I didn't bring any coax connectors with me other than RG6... Sea Ray really needs to learn how do hook up a coax cable.

New London is a crappy harbor at the beginning of Fishers Island Sound. They have better fuel prices than I've seen - paid $4.959 yesterday, but would have saved $50 if I was a Sea Tow member.

Price on Mystic River (Noank Shipyard) was $5.12 with a Boat US membership last week. If you stay at Noank Shipyard (at the mouth of the Mystic River) you can walk to Abbotts Lobster in the Rough.

Gary you'll be right around us.....We may be headed to the Napatree beach area this weekend.
If you get to Newport, the Castle Hill Inn has great food
Safe travels

That is a long run through New York harbor, up the east River, and east through the Sound across the length of Long Island...6-7 hours easy...you might want to stop somewhere further west, like Port Jefferson. Danfords has a beautiful marina and a great restuarant on site with fuel. Then you could head northeast to Mass Wednesday morning. And you'll have a nice southwest breeze at your back across the sound. Just a thought.

wow, that is a long run. I'm tired just reading it.

Long Island Sound looked smooth as glass as I crossed the Whitestone Bridge this morning, so once you get there, you should have smooth sailing. Not sure of your average speed, but at 20 to 24 knots, Mystic is 4 hours away and Newport about 5 +. Port Jefferson is a great waypoint and is only 2 hrs from the western end of the sound. Lots of restuarants, shops etc.

Port Jefferson. Danfords has a beautiful marina and a great restuarant on site with fuel.

Ditto on Danfords AND port Jeff...I strongly suggest this as a stop regardless. PJ is a great little town, LOTS of good restaurants, shops of all kinds from upscale to antiques, entertainment, clean place with lots to do. The gas is easy to access (shell station) as it is right at the beginning of the harbor, VERY easy to navigate as it is wide open there.

I grew up on LI and we used to go to PJ all of the time. I was JUST there this past weekend as I took the ferry back and forth with the kids.

Look for the two red and white smokestacks...classic LI sound marker to PJ!

PS...We are having a raft up on lake zoar if you can trailer your boat this weekend up to Oxford CT. :)

We made it to Mystic...

It's not that bad of a run if you take a nap on autopilot.

The rollers on the coast of Jersey were kicking up from hurricane Bertha today and got some people sick. Always pleasent looking back down in the cockpit and seeing the wife holding the children so they can vomit over the edge:

I hate pulling into a marina with chunks dried on the side of the hull.

I'll update the blog later... we have friends that live here so I need to go be "friendly".

where's Gary's new update? Is he off making a fifth sun?

I just updated the blog.

We are heading out to Martha's Vineyard today. That should be about a 3 hour run...

Read it...awesome so far Gary. Really enjoying the reading and vomiting pics.

Can you stay out longer than 4 weeks? Your blog site has replaced my morning routine of coffee and the newspaper. Now it's coffee and the Foursuns blog spot. I find this "new" routine a heluva lot more fun and interesting. So...what the hell was the guy thinking when he parked his dingy over his shore power cords???

Very cool! You should change your signature to:

Four screaming children
Two stupid dogs
One angry wife
1,000+ online squatters

Thanks for sharing, looking forward to hearing about Martha's Vineyard.

If you look real close at his pic of the city, you can see me waving

Yeah, it's good stuff for sure. As I commented on the Blog, I can't imagine being in only 30' of water and 4' swells trying to run at speed in a 48' boat.

That's amazing

Keep up the good work. Since you already pointed out the cap that was off I guess I can't give you a hard time about it.

So when do the dogs start chewing stuff up? (you know: remote controls, etc!!!!) Such events really "spice up" the posts if I remember correctly!
