Might have found the one... offer help, please!

If everything is on an even playing field, than a respectful offer is no more than 10% off asking price. Any more, it’s Viewed by the seller a D$ck move and you’ll be turned away. Offer 10%, then go to survey. If costly problems are found then you have a second chance to negotiate the difference to fix or you can just walk. This is the proper way to buy a boat.

I’m assuming you haven’t read the entire thread, and no worries if you’re just catching up. I appreciate the insight regardless, but what’s with the tone?

I wasn’t turned away by my “d$ck move”, some refer to it as “negotiating skills”... I also don’t get emotional about buying toys. I’m not sure where the 10% figure came from. This particular boat was listed for substantially more than many comps with similar options. “Respectful offer” or not, if they want to sell for what I’m willing to pay I’ll buy it. If not, I’ll keep looking.

Worked for me this time and the deal’s in place. “Proper” would have cost me an additional $20-30k. Just need to make it through survey this week and I’ll be excited to share some more details and pics.

It’s not a “d$ck move” if you are a prepared and motivated buyer with cash in hand.
It’s a “d$ck move” if you are a “rudder kicker” seeing how low the owner will go and then need to see if you can get financing or make a contingent offer on dumping your boat.

Will you have your surveyor with you on the sea trial? I assume yes. In this case if you run that boat for a good hour or so, let your surveyor get down into the engine room while it's running, take a look around. Make sure you know what the boat should hit in terms of WOT speed and RPM's. Make sure it gets to those marks, can stay there for a minute or two, and can return once or twice.

With as new as this boat is I'd be okay with skipping the compression test if the boat performs flawlessly for that hour +/-. If she hesitates, all bets are off.

And if you're in Grand Haven for the sea trial make sure they don't include the 30 minutes of getting out to the big lake in the hour of run time. Run that beauty up to Muskegon and back...no less.

We came to terms on a deal. I think we ended up at a fair price in the end. Survey and Sea Trial are this Thursday.

The boat only has about 250 hours and I really wanted to get compression test done for peace of mind. Unfortunately I can’t find a mechanic that’s not 3-4 weeks out on work right now.

How comfortable would you all be to pass on the compression test assuming everything looks ok on sea trial? The boat is in very good condition from what I’ve seen and was professionally maintained by an “open checkbook” owner.
I’m in the same boat. No response from mechanics to have compression test done.

This is the route I’m going to take, Stee. Yet again, more great feedback and advice. You’re the man!

She’s ours! We drove her to her new home yesterday and spent the day cleaning and prepping for the season. We still have a lot to learn and I’ll be here with open ears regularly to take in as much as I can. Thanks to all of those that provided so much helpful feedback, especially Stee! Hoping whenever there’s another Great Lakes CSR get together we get to finally put some names to faces.

I didn’t get many pics, but here she is getting cleaned up after our first dinner on the grill.

Nice!!! Congrats on an awesome purchase!! Man....I would never leave that swim platform. Holy smokes...you could have dinner for 4 on that thing. So jealous.

We took a trip from Grand Haven to Saugatuck last week. I wondered if you had done the deed. Very cool.

So many places to visit, such a short summer. Gas her up and go!

Congrats! Were you out and about Grand Haven yesterday or the day before?

We left Grand Haven this morning and think I saw a 350 headed down the channel on one of our walks.

That was probably us! Right around lunch time. We’ll be back up that way often for lunch and dinner once we get a handle on things. Hoping to get in touch with Stee, I owe him a drink or 12 for a lot of great insight.

There is no such thing as “respectful offer” and “dic$ move” in business.

Nothing personal, It’s just business.

When I was selling my 06 260, I had a guy say he didn't want to offend me with his offer.
I simply said, you won't offend me, ill either say yes, or no.
I said no, but I sure wasn't offended.
The people that ended up buying it had been looking for five years.

I do like to drink. And Grand Haven is well equipped with such establishments. ha.

If you like the Grand Haven scene the next thing we're going to need to sell you on is a dinghy...and some davits for that expansive swim platform of yours :)

Tying up in Grand Haven is a PITA right now with the wall shut down. I predict a record number of hours on the ole Zodiak this year...

Those negotiations with the wife have started in a very slow, “Wow, look at the dinghy on that boat. Wouldn’t that be nice someday?”, kind of way. Hopefully that will happen at some point. First we need to get our heads wrapped around learning the ins and outs of our new toy and how to keep her clean. Don’t worry, I’ve been lurking a lot of threads and we have all of the go-to cleaning supplies/waxes on the way.

We’ll be sanitizing the water system this weekend and I’m going to replace the stereo amp. Hopefully weather cooperates and I can get some time in to practice docking and enjoy a cruise on the big lake.
