Michigan waterspouts

I experienced a water spot going right over the top of our boat in the Grand River a few years ago. We could not avoid it. I thought it was a tornado at the time. Turned out to be a non-event as we experienced just a very sharp downdraft that lasted less than a second. It continued moving along the river toward the Holiday Inn and then fizzled out.

About 30 years ago I had a chance to watch 3 waterspouts move onshore onto Wilmette Beach, north of Chicago. I was at another beach about 3 miles away. One of the waterspouts picked a Hobie Cat up off the beach and tossed it over a fence without it touching the fence. No injuries, but definitely some minor damage.

Lake Michigan cruising is so interesting. We try to avoid the bad stuff but sometimes it is best to put the engines in neutral and go below until the storm blows past you.
