I emailed a quote request to Mercury for one of our 350 Mag. Bravo 3 drives. Merc replied with the following rates.

The following suggested list price quotes include Wisconsin sales tax of 5% and are subject to change on the date my drive(s) went into service.

1 year $ 441.00
2 years $ 756.00
3 years $ 1071.00
4 years $ 1533.00

The total warranty and Product Protection coverage is not to exceed the six year limit. (2 yr. warranty on new purchases + up to 4 yrs extended warranty)

You may purchase Mercury Product Protection from any authorized Mercury dealer or directly from Mercury.

For engine related warranty, I would rather work with Mercury than Passport at these prices.

If it were me I would go back to the dealer you bought your boat from and purchase the extended warranty from them. Dealers have a fair amount of margin (profit) built into the "standard" prices and you may be able to get a reduction off the standard pricing.

Dave - I'm going to check with my SR dealer and also the marina where we keep our boat. Both are Premier Merc Dealers. Now that I know where LIST price is, I'll see where the price goes from there.

Stray Cat,
I found that my dealer was a little less expensive on the pricing for the Mercury extended warranties, than the prices quoted directly from Merc. This I think is a good thing, because when purchasing from the dealer, they now have complete records of all warranty information and this should make them the administrator for any claims.

The cost depends on the dealer. :smt017 My dealer pushed the Passport and did not want to bring up the Mercury warranty at all. I got as part of the purchase deal on the 220SD a 3 year mercury warranty paid for by SR. Then just this past month I picked up the other 3 years direct from Mercury at $1050.00. The warranty already paid for itself when I had a hydraulic ram jam up and something broke inside. The $800.00 repair bill was handled by Mercury. :smt038

As for buying it from the dealer and they knowing you have the warranty vs buying direct from Mercury is a non issue. The moment the dealer pulls up your motor serial it is there automatically. Besides that, Mercury sends a card for you too keep on file. Just keep it in the boat. And one last thing I just remembered, you don't have to buy the extended warranty till your current one is about to expire.

I will repeat something Frank and I talked about on warranties a while back. Look at your exposure. For me my biggest cost factor is the motor and out drive systems. Pass port is supposed to cover all that and the rest. The $3000.00 pass port price at the time of my purchase did not make for a good value for me. The value vs cost is what you have to take a look at. And that is going to vary from owner and boat, no two cases are completely alike. :smt024

Best of luck in your decision.

Stihlbolts, I agree with the exposure on the drive packages. I'm only considering Merc protection not Passport.

I was going to play the angle that I only use the boat 6 mo. per year due to winter layup. Therefore, 1 year of warranty is only 6 months of value, it reduces Mercs exposure vs. say a boater in an area that can boat year around....what da ya think? :smt017

It's my understanding that the Merc Horizons have a 4 year warranty. 3 years + 1 with "quality installation." So an extended warranty( by either Passport or Merc) would only be for 2 years for a total of 6, right? So in my case I would only need a 2 year plan for the maximum coverage?

Stray - The logic that your exposure is reduced because your only boating 6 months is flawed. You have no more risk because you boat longer or shorter. Break downs will occur regardless. Bad or malfunctioning parts can cause problems at any time. With that in mind, the continued operation of your boat makes for less problems than a boat that lays up all the time.

If you switch the argument that because you are keeping the boat on the hard and getting the Mercury warrant because it gives you protection where you need it (Motor and out drive) at a savings vs a pass port warranty then it's a valid plan.

What you have that I don't have are:
TVs - How much does it cost for a new TV? Maybe you want to up grade in a couple of years anyway.

Refrigerator - It won't last forever, will pass port pay you for old age? Don't think so.

Gages - If they don't stop working in the first year, more than likely they are going to last a awhile. Gages are cheaper than the warranty.

Can you think of anything else not motor related that might break down?

Dog - I don't know what the Horizon warranty term is. But once you get your boat, call Mercruiser and they will tell you. If Sea Ray is paying for the extra warranty follow up with Mercruiser to make sure they got Sea Ray's check. It took 6 months for them to get the check from SR on my extra 2 years SR paid for. :smt021 I did not like that part. :smt013 Once SR's check was in Mercruiser hands all was well.
If you got that type of warranty you will get a card from Mercruiser offering you a extension sometime during the 1st year of your ownership. It should have the years and amounts for each term on it.

Bridog - I'm not sure you would be limited to only 2 yrs on the Merc Plan. I presume your serial numbers on the drives will determine the limit of extended warranty with Merc. I think Passport runs concurrent with your 3 + 1 drive warranty, therefore you would get a maximum of 6....I think :smt017

Hey, spring 2007 is nearly here, when will you take delivery?

That still only gives a Max of 6 years total extended warranty. Just means he only has to pay for 2 years. Both the Pass Port and Mercruiser warranty are only for a total of 6 years period. :smt024 Would be nice to squeek a couple of extra years out of them, but they ain't buying it.

Brian, that's not completely correct.
The Horizon drives are covered for 3 years for mechanical items and corrosion.

The engines are one year base warranty plus one year for the installation quality certification program.

You would need to purchase 4 years from Mercury to equal the 6 years from Passport for the engines only.

All Merc warranties are from the date the product is first sold to a recreational use or the date on which the product is first put into service – whichever occurs first.

Even though you have 2 years on the engines, you must purchase the warranty extensions from Mercury before the end of the first year of service. It’s important to note that you can only buy one extension, so you need to decide how many years will work best for you.

That is not correct unless something has changed in the past 30 days. I waited till the last month of my 3 year warranty to purchase the additional three year extension. Mercury sent me a reminder card that my warranty was going to expire. I filled it out the form and mailed it back in with my check. Two weeks later I e-mailed customer service and they advised me it was effective. Just that easy.

Very interesting that Merc. did this. The warranty book states†One, two, three, four or five year term plans can be purchased up to 12 months after the original engine registration date." Several weeks ago this was confirmed by a call to both Mercury and my dealer when I was trying to sort out all of this stuff.

Perhaps the three year horizon sterndrive warranty is handled differently.
