Mercury Marine and Unions

their structure is against fishing, so they have no where to go but out of business.

Sorry man, this is a very weak argument from your very biased position. Essentially, it seems to me that you are "in the business", and are upset that you aren't working more. That hardly justifies an argument that the "new way" isn't any good. Would you suggest that many of the digital effects in a movie like "Lord of the Rings" were not of any value? How about all digital movies, like "Beowulf"? The newest computer generated stuff is amazing, and gets better each year. And you could very much make the argument that it requires more work to not only make a movie using these new techniques - but to invent the new techniques themselves - than doing it the old way.

Life gives you a chance to go out and get what you want out of it. Those that wait for someone else to get it for them usually go without.

As Colin Cowherd likes to say, "this is a you problem, not a me problem"...
Actually some flicks are done very well.
I really liked the way action adventure movies were turning out from like 96. THX, Then DTS good story lines with great audio and special effects. Im buying movies like every week.

Fast forward 10 years. Working on the Lot where Poseidon adventure is being filmed. Think to myself. This is going to be a great. Should be done in DTS. This one should be worth buying. What a joke. Looked like that tub was floating in a bathtub. Most movies have gotten so bad. The cheap 5.00 buck Walmart were not worth the money.

All this has nothing to do with how much work I get. I'm usually so busy i'm looking forward to taking a few month off. Like i'm doing now. I'm actually cranky that i'm on the computer instead of installing my fuel tanks and engine now.
Putting off work till I install them items.

He is pissed off because "talkies" replaced the organ player of "silent film" fame!!!

We have to stop this moving forward and go back to simpler times.....I want a carborator.....to hell with fuel injection! I want a sail, to hell with motors!!!

What I really want is for this freaking rain to stop !
:lol::lol::lol: I do sort of wish I went with a Carbed 502ci.
I could not get one in a turn key version. So I went with the EFI 496ci. Teamsters make plenty of compromises.
I need some rain, Haven't had any in over 6 month.

Tail Chaser,

Just so I'm clear on this......Are your posts in this thread serious?

Let's see. I work 30 years, get paid 60 years all the while cursing the employers & technology that makes my job possible in the first place. I wonder how Califirnia's economy is doing lately?
Teamsters need to work 30 yrs or 60,000 hrs.
Rumor has it, Most teamsters die within 3 years of retirement in the Motion Picture Industry.

Its the seeing how middle class jobs all over America are being outsourced i'm venting about. Even Companys that are very profitable. Corporate greed.
Hearing about the Merc plant must have pushed a hidden button

Calif economy is not good while supporting illegal aliens and the welfare system.

I agree with a ton of the info posted about corporate greed. As you can see, with this audience (as well as most others), it doesn't pay to generalize too much. I also agree that there are blue collar unions which focus on increasing inefficiencies as opposed to protecting worker's rights.

Thanks for the heads up John. Your a class act
I had thought about it. And knew I would catch a bunch of flack with all the Union bashing going on. Doesn't matter, Its all entertainment value. Probably good they got to vent there frustrations. Americans never should have had it so good

I'll take my 2 1/2 time overtime pay when I can get it. Enjoy my free meals when i'm filming with production. And take whatever pension I end up with while taking over 3 months off a year.

I do wonder how I consider getting into threads like this as entertainment though. :smt017 Watching the grass grow would be more productive.

Is this the definition of "corporate greed"?

And that mister is why people hate unions.

We also have no life at this time. Work hrs are always changing. May go in at 3 AM Monday morning. Work a 18 or 22 hr day. Get 8 hrs off before being back to work the next/same day. Calls start getting pushed so everyone has there turn around.

Union rules protecting workers from completely being dogged.
If we don't get the 8 hrs off. We start at the previous nights pay. Actors/Directors get more time on the turn around. They also go home at wrap and put in the least amount of hrs. Usually making a Min of 5K a week.

The crew still has to load all the rigging back on the trucks. Transportation has to haul it all back to the studios and park the equipment. Then back to work in 8 hrs and haul all of equipment to another location before the crews show up early preparing for the next shoot.
If not for Union contract turn around policy. We would most likely be getting like 4 hrs off.

Anyhow, By Friday. Calls end up being late afternoon and your watching the sun come up on Saturday.
In a Muti Billion dollar industry. Nice to have a good Union making it more difficult for Producers to rake in all the money, While there paying the crew members chump change.

Thats all I got to say about that. :smt015

Actors and directors make more than the crew because they're more valuable, more talented, and in demand. (for the most part - you can always name exceptions)

If you don't like the work conditions, get another job.

This is what I don't get about people who moan about their bosses, jobs, pay scale, or other work conditions - why don't you quit and do something else? And if you (or everyone else who moans about these types of things) won't quit, then stop the moaning.

Your company not providing you with enough donuts? Buy your own damn donuts.

I couldn't have said it better... I bet you've started and run your own company... you greedy bastard.
