mercruiser starting problem

I have a 1999 5.0 l. Alpha ii. When i turn the key the gauges activate but the engine will not turn over, no noise at all, after 1-10 attempts it turns over normal. This happens almost everytime. I have tightened all connections and tried bypassing the neutral safety switch with no change. Any ideas?

Tightened the connections on the starter, too? Did you also clean all the connections? Did it look like there was any corrosion working it's way underneath the cable sheathing?

Try bypassing the key switch to see if that's the culprit. Combine the red and purple wires, then momentarily touch the yellow wire to them to start.
