Two weeks ago I took my boat into a local repair shop to have the outdrive serviced and the impeller changed. After 10 days I went back to see if it was done. I was told by the mechanic that he was waiting for parts which I thought was strange. The next day I called the owner and he said he was out getting parts and the job would be done that day. I went back to the shop that evening to pick up the boat and the mechanic told me he was still waiting for parts. I asked the mechanic to show me my boat as I wanted to see if any work had been started. He refused on the grounds that their insurance would not allow me to be in the yard. I then asked him to bring my boat to the front and I would find someone else to complete the job, he said he had already removed the drive. I then told him I needed the boat by next wednesday and he said it would be ready. Yesterday I deceided to go look for myself. I parked next to the fence, got in the bed of my truck and low and behold my boat was parked in the yard and the outdrive was still on the boat. Now that I have been lied to several times and the time for our vacation is quickly approaching I feel a strong need to get the boat back and do the work myself. I do most of the maintenance myself but I have never changed the impeller. I have read the shop manual and a few internet articles, it does not seem like it is too complicated. I am confused about a couple of things. Do I need any special tools? The book talks about a water seal seating tool and 2 pins to line up the gaskets under the pump base and which pump parts should I replace as I noticed many different combinations of parts kits for this job. Lastly are there any items I need to watch out for ?

I would as to talk to the manager and expain the situation to him. It is only a one hour job to do this. Mabey you can get a discount.

I don't know the answer to your question but I do know that that shop would never see my boat or my money again!! And all of my friends would know what happened!!

i did my first impeller job and it took me about a hour. The hardest part was reinstalling the lower unit and getting the gear shift drive all lined up.

The only "special" tool you would need, or at least I needed was the lower unit fluid pump. It screws on to the quart bottles so you can pump the fluid into the drive.

Having a second set of hands around is also a help.

I brought the impeller kit. It had the housing, gaskets, pick up tube and impeller. Also grabbed some 2-4-C lube and was all set. This was all on a 3.0L merc with a alpha 1 outdrive.

I would tell the owner what we used to tell the employees at TGI Friday's. If someone receives bad service they will tell 10 people about their experience.
