last week our local dealership replaced both engine risers & sensors. when they started, the port engine overheated within 5 mins. I've never experienced overheating with these engines before (175' all day long). I check my instruments all the time. CO error codes were driving me crazy, therefore we decided to replace both engine risers. Almost five years old, she was commissioned in 2016. The starboard engine is fine, no overheating issues yet.

is it possible?
  • They've installed risers/gaskets incorrectly?
  • Faulty Thermostat / but it was OK before
  • Risers were badly rusted, when they removed them maybe some broken parts blocking the freshwater cooling system
  • or maybe small broken rusty riser particles blocking the freshwater pump
Any suggestions or comments, please. Many thanks.

All are possible though I doubt the thermostat would fail at the same exact time as the risers were done, if it wasn't touched.

I;m not familiar with the newer years but on my dry joint risers there are three different gasket options (between the riser and manifold) -- call them restricted, full flow and block off. It's possible they used the wrong one.

Also possible you have a blockage. Somewhat off topic but I just added a new master shut off valve in the house, right at the water meter where the water enters the foundation. Right afterwards the Admiral tells me that the washing machine is "really hot" and turns out that some rust/sediment found its way into the the cold hose to the machine, so only hot water is getting through. Could be the same here.

I've had thermostats fail on cars before in either way (stuck open or stuck closed).

Hi Phil, thank you. it's truly very frustrating. We went there for riser replacement, now I have overheating issue. It's possible some rust/sediment blocking freshwater system / heat-exchanger or maybe thermostat,. who knows??

Sorry to sound like GRRRRRR but what kind of mechanic do they employ? I'm not sure why they have made this your worry? They had the boat before they did the work and hopefully were familiar enough with it to know that it wasn't overheating but now it is. Are you a saltwater boater? I ask because with the ECT engines I've been told they O2 sensors don't like saltwater. In any case have they verified the engine is actually overheating? Then rechecked their work? I'm guessing it's a v-drive boat? They should be back tracking to find the problem and not coming to you with it. After this issue is resolved and I hope easily for you, find another shop, a qualified one to work on your boat.

Are you in the water or out? Might be time to re-open the sea cock to that engine.......
