Mercruiser + 4.3 thinking about radical swap to LS1, any help?

Ok, I just wanted to get some opinions here on the valuation of this swap. To me, a first timer, it feels as though someone is taking advantage of me.

The final price is $6,000 for the crate engine and installation! And that is a direct swap with a 4.3 and no upgrades. He charged me $600.00 just to remove the engine and inspect it. I sure feel like I have been HAD.

Any thought?

Being a "car guy" myself, you have to leave the "car cost" idea at home. I am a first time boat owner and long time car guy. The cost of boat upgrades and tinkering is way up there. Is that $6,000 total out the door? It has been said before, LS1 tech and a couple other sites are invaluable when it comes to information. Keep us updated on your progress!! That price sounds reasonable. I just had mine rebuilt for close to that. If it includes all labor and troubleshooting it seems fair.
