So has anyone seen a stock 1988 350 merc. knock a hole in the top of its mechanical fuel pump?It looks like the pump came unglued.A 1/4" slotted hole on the very top of the pump the motor has 640 hours on it. The only reason I found it was it leaked a lot of oil.The motor ran fine with the damaged pump. I've been around small block chevys for along time never seen a pump fail like this.

Was it original pump? The housings are only cast aluminum and not very strong. I believe the upper housing encloses the return spring which is quite strong and may have gotten the best of the housing. New pump and all should be fine.

As far as I can tell it was the original. Replaced it with a defective telaflex sierra pump that they gave me my money back then installed a Carter marine pump and so far I've been good to go.

Sierra had a run of bad small block pumps last year. I know 1 guy at our yacht that went thru 4 bad pumps before getting a good one.

Summit racing is local so the second time around I bought a Carter marine pump from them .Saved shipping and the pump cost $95.00 The only thing that I had to do was swap the lower half off the original pump so the tubing lined up correctly.I'm not sure who mercruiser uses for fuel pumps but I figured Carter was a good make of pump.

I put a Quicksilver pump on my '88 CV-23 last year when it just stopped. I'm not a fan of Sierra parts so I always use Mercury or Quicksilver, Mike.
