Many boats at my dock are experiencing excessive zinc erosion, and I would like to do a little detective work. I am suspecting stray currents, as the rates of erosion are higher than what you would typically see with galvanic corrosion problems.

So I would like to measure the ground current in the shore power connection of my SunDancer 300. I have a good-quality digital volt/amp meter, but I do not know of a "clean" way to insert the ammeter in series with the ground wire without doing a lot of hacking. Does anyone have a recommendation?

Also, I bought the QUicksilver silver reference probe, and want to use it to not only probe around my outdrives (as described in numerous Quicksilver documents) but also to see if any DC or AC currents are flowing through the water. I am not sure about the best way to do this; do I ground the negative side of the voltmeter to my battery ground, and then probe the water in the vicinity of my boat? How far away from my boat should I probe? What readings are normal for AC and DC voltages? There doesn't seem to be much information on this type of probing.

Thanks for any pointers!
