Marina Etiguette

a dock neighbor of mine has a basset hound puppy that sounds like an old man barking at the sea and he is affraid of everything so he barks at everything. he is kind enough to not take him on overnights and when he does come down it is for a short time.

I have 2 dogs that go to the boat when we do. They stay on the boat and are not allowed to roam the dock unless we are there. They don't bark unless someone steps on the boat and then its a couple of warning woofs to let someone know they better be friends. We leave them on the boat and go to dinner for several hours and know one even knows they are there. This is what they typically look like on the boat.

And when we are underway they look like this:

They don't poop on the docks and we pick up the poop on the grass....and usually someone elses. Dogs that are not well behaved are the fault of the owners. When my dogs do walk the dock and are welcome on any of our friends boats....except for my male, he has developed a fondness for Gentleman Jack.

Norcal, I love the pictures! They look like good dogs!

This is one that you will make you think about what kind of boaters we are dealing with at times. Our quit time in the marina is 11:00 pm till 8:00 am. Reason for this; there are 2 bars in the marina that play music till 11:00 pm.
There is a new boater in the marina that thinks the quit time is when he wants it not when they are posted. Our group has been having a good time with music and fellowship for years in the marina.
The new boater has been to office so many times about load music. That the management told him that some times certain boaters just don’t belong in certain marinas and this is probably one they don’t belong in. So they should look else where for dockage.
It was about a month after that the marina received a anonyms letter that I was supposedly dumping my head into the marina with fecal matter floating in the marina.
Then it went on to cut down me and the management of the marina saying that they had no control over what went on in the marina and certain people were allowed to do what ever they wanted because management was afraid of them.
I wonder who would have written that anonymous letter?

Doug, I understand your point. Sometimes there are people who just shouldn’t be there at a particular dock or marina. Our “Group”, has a good time on our dock. We’ve been known to go for quite a while, but not making noise after 10-11ish. Other than an occasional ballgame or something we are watching as a group, or a game of cards, etc.

But there is a person(s) on our dock, who is....... a pain. He/she make it difficult for us sometimes and then blatantly lies about some of us to the marina office. The office usually ignors them, but we have heard about it through the grapevine.

These people still like to come to parties on the dock and join in our potlucks, but they are having a harder time these days, after our last office visit....... Again, some people just don’t belong.

I would love to have "marina life" like you guys...

The funny thing about swimming in the marina area is the fact that my particular marina is in fresh water that is surrounded by swimming areas. Gotta love sea cows...

Transient docking for the Labor day weekend and I can't say I have ever run into this before.A group of people decided to turn the main walk way to the dock into their living room with their chairs and snack tables. This was not just for a period of time but the whole weekend and on top of that they were just loud and obnoxious. One person brought this to their attention that they were blocking the walk way and they told him to mind his own business for less of words.Their demeanor reminded me of a group of people at a event just looking for a confrontation with others. This is the kind of thing the dock master should have dealt with when it first started.

I cannot stand when folks set up shop on the docks blocking the way. I'm ok with chairs but when the tables come out in the middle of the main pier it becomes obnoxious. Big boat or small that is what your cockpit is for.

I wonder how it would have worked to remind them that they are guests in the marina, and could easily be shown the door. Barring that, you could find out where they call home, and pay them a visit after gorging at a Red Hot Chili eating contest. Leave them a present on their swim platforms or finger piers, if you catch my drift. (Wink, wink, nudge, nudge, say no more)

Now you know that's not politically correct, don't you?

Well first nice day of the season here and it sure didn’t take long to see some jerks out in force. I was rinsing my boat off after coming in and as I look up I see a Sea Ray (maybe a 290) coming out of the marina at about 10kts with 7 or 8 people aboard. Mind you they were well within the breakwater inside the marina among slips and hadn’t even passed my slip yet throwing a substantial wake. When he passed me I motioned my hands for him to slow down, and he (not even acknowledging me) did ..a little. No one even looked at me standing on my swim platform as they passed me. I just stared at them go by. Anyway after they passed the breakwater some guy in the back shouted something in my direction and pointed. I couldn’t hear what he was saying, but it sounded threatening. I saw the boat op turn around and snap at him, but the guy yelled again. Still couldn’t make it out though. Then he dropped the hammer and took off. I know every Sea Ray in my marina and know exactly where this guy’s slip is although I’ve never met him. Seems like every year I see more and more ass clowns on the water.

That’s the biggest problem with boating. Beyond writing a check for the boat, a lot of people have no idea about rules, and after they do things the wrong way long enough the wrong way becomes the norm, and there is too little enforcement on the water.

One of my big pet peeves is the blasting of stereos. It seems to be an automatic assumption that these people's taste in music is so cool, that everyone in the marina should enjoy it. It makes me want to rent bagpipes and then bless them with my own music. (either that or a train horn)

yep , where I am , we are on a "fun" dock for adults that are emancipated from now grown children. however, the weekends turn into frat parties into the wee hours. I also have an issue with the "designated dock DJ". I am a very understanding guy, and if there are people gathering around one boat which often happens, I get the fact that one guy may have the music a little bit louder for the group , but if you can hear it several slips away , its too much. when I hang out in the cockpit with tunes, I usually walk the immediate area around my boat to make sure the vol is right. I have two smaller kids, and im sure the "group" may resent that , but they are all in their 50's now and should act that way. I in no way impose my "kidness" on anybody , but coming back from the bar at 2am and playing music and being loud isn't too cool every weekend!

The loud music thing isn't cool at all and very annoying. The last experience I had with that was a few weeks ago at the boat yard while I was doing my annual out of water maintenance. Some guy working on his go fast ski boat was blasting rap music at what must have been as loud as his boat stereo could go. Most people there working on their sailboats and trawlers were visibly annoyed. I was probably the youngest person there (43) other than the inconsiderate go fast rap jerk. Anyway it went on for a few hours until there was a bit of an uprising and several owners went and confronted him. No more music and he trailered out shortly thereafter.

So far as leaving the marina as fast as the guys yesterday, I went and left a note on his boat this morning gently reminding him that the marina is a no wake zone and to please give me a call if he has any questions. If someone is throwing a bit of a wake I don't mind, but this guy was probably pushing 2000rpm and 10-12kts. 50 ft boats were rocking back and forth significantly and pulling hard on their lines from his wake. It was ludicrous. I wonder if he calls me. They were young, so might have been his daddy's boat. Maybe his daddy will get the note. :)

Last year I was sleeping on the boat and had the windows open. About 1:00AM I heard music blasting. Popped my head up to see it was one of the dock neighbors. He is a nice guy but his boat is like a frat party every weekend. I don't mind if I can hear your music at normal hours even if it isn't what I like but 1:00AM is a little too much
