Hi all,

Looking to boat down to NYC from Lake Champlain, any suggestions as for marinas and good spots to dock on or close to Manhattan ?

Thanks.

There are not a lot of options believe it or not. You will rock and roll all night at most marinas on the Hudson (Chelsea Piers, etc.) Several people here recommend Liberty Landing in Jersey, near the Statue of Liberty. Apparently, you can avoid the rocking and rolling there. Long Island Sound offers some better alternative and some harbours for safe anchorage

I stayed in chelsea piers at marinemax in early june and had no problems with rocking at night. During the day it's a little rough when a large barge or cruise ship passes but at night everything calms down.

The worst of the turbulence is during the day when the ferry's and water taxis running, and it can be rough; but it settles down at night except for the rare tug.

I've stayed in 4 on the Hudson and they all have their assets and liabilities. The first 3 are on the New Jersey side of the Hudson with magnificent view of Manhattan, especially at night.
Liberty Landing - the quietest of the bunch in a nice park with the water taxi running during the day across to the financial district of Manhattan or Jersey City and a nice (but expensive) restaurant; but isolated with no shopping and hard to get anywhere with no taxi or train service unless you take the water taxi across the canal to Jersey City, hopefully the new building is completed and showers and facilities are available. http://www.libertylandingmarina.com
Newport Yacht Club & Marina - Close to the Path subway into Manhattan and close to shopping and nice local type restaurants and a mall. Very rough and showers and facilities leave a lot to be desired. http://www.newportnjmarina.com/
Lincoln Harbor - Nice area and close to a Ferry that runs to Manhattan into the evening, upscale restaurants and some nice shopping and decent showers and facilities. Still a little rough water. http://www.lincolnharbormarina.com/index.php
79th Street Boat Basin - An experience in itself. 10 min walk to Central Park with all the shopping, eating, and entertainment you could want and plenty of taxis to get you around. Rough water when there is any, very shallow, often leaving you resting on the muck when the tide goes out. Be sure to turn off your heat and air conditioning at low tide. Doesn't take reservations (first come, first serve) and no facilities. But and experience to be had. http://www.nycgovparks.org/sub_things_to_do/facilities/marinas/pdf/brochure.pdf

I also stayed at the Worlds Fair Marina in Flushing Bay, but that's another story.
