"Tom Perkins Puts Superyacht on Market

Let’s say you spent more than $150 million to build your dream yacht.

And let’s say you pored over every detail, from the cut of the sails to the color of the carpet. You made sure it was 289 feet, making it the largest privately-owned sailing yacht in the world. Let’s say you were so anxious to show it off that you proudly displayed it on “60 Minutes” and in multiple magazines. And when asked by Lesley Stahl why you needed to have a 289-foot sailing yacht, you replied: “I just wanted the biggest boat. Do I have an ego? Yes. Is it big? Yes.”

Why, after going through all this trouble building such a prize, would you put it up for sale?

Good question. According to Superyachttimes.com, Mr. Perkins has put Maltese Falcon on the market for 115 million euros. It’s being listed by Perini Navi, which built the boat. Maltese Falcon has been in the water for less than two years.

Setting aside the obvious problem of how to sell a megayacht in the middle of a financial crisis, I have a hard time understanding why anyone would sell their dream project.

Maybe it’s the same reason so many wealthy people sell their dream mansions once they’ve finished building them: The new rich are project addicts who love creating and building. They live for solving problems and achieving things no one else has, such as building a square-masted, 289-foot sailboat. But once they’re done with a project, they lose interest in it.

Or perhaps Mr. Perkins’ motives are purely economic. If he built the boat for $150 million or more, perhaps he hopes to make a profit with a sale price of more than $180 million. Or maybe, like Larry Ellison, he found that his boat was simply too big to enjoy, or to dock at his favorite ports."
