We have been kicking around the idea of getting a dog. The thing is we want a small dog...needs to be smart and most important a personality. What got us on the Maltese breed is we have a neighbor two doors down that has one.... when this dog sees us up on our deck he is like a bullet coming thru the yards to run up on the deck and hang out...you can literally have a conversation with this guy. Just a great dog and disposition... the other reason is my wife is very allergic.

So was just curious if anyone has one, what they are like and how they would be on the boat.

    If you are curious

We have a Havanese. Similar. Very bright, easy to train and loves the boat.

Started his boat experience when he was a small pup. Always with us on every trip. Does excellent on the water.

A girl in our neighborhood had one of those...don't let it swim in the bay where the muskies hang out.

my mom raised dobermans as we grew up....bred them showed them...we lived on a farm at the time. Heidi was the champion female ....she was the guard and house dog as well.... with a ferocious appetite for barn cats.... it wasn’t proven but the farmer across the road said Heidi was killing all his barn cats.....he screamed it carrying a shotgun walking up the driveway...mad as hell.... it was a very dramatic afternoon as my dad walked out of the house with his shotgun..... so muskies with little dogs or farmers with big dogs ....isn’t it all the same? :)

Not if your wife sees that V wake right behind the bait(dog), she'll be traumatized and take to drinking. That's what happened to the neighbor girl. Maybe she'd of been a drunk anyway, it ran in the family but boy did she scream and cry when that dog disappeared, us guys felt bad for the dog but still.....it was pretty cool.:p

Don't know why but your tale of the appetite for barn cats brought to mind a true tale (tail???) from many years ago. We raised/bred/showed/raced Siberian Huskies. We had 4 dogs in the back yard.

Next door neighbor kid loved cats. This kid wasn't the brightest bulb in the harbor but a nice kid. He complained one day about his cats. Seems they would last about 3-4 months then disappear. Are you gettin' the picture?

His cats, one after another, would climb the wood fence and get into our yard. Happened often but not for long, if you get my drift.

I think the dogs looked at it as some kind of sport. Kinda like hackey sack only with a recently deceased cat.

Too many dogs that need to be rescued thanks to dirtbags all over the world so I don't buy bred dogs. Our last dog was a rescued Golden. We had him for 13 years. We all really miss him. Our new dog as of nine months ago or so is a guess as too breed. Both of these dogs had/have incredible personalities and are/were perfect for boats other than hair... Our new dog is an absolute character. She keeps us laughing.

Another option for a very bright dog that loves the boat and doesn’t shed is a Cavapoo. It is a King Charles Cavalier and a mini poodle. Very well
Mannered and not a lot of health issues as a breed. Our friends with a boat have one and she is the best. So we got one and called him Brady, he is truly an awesome dog. He loves the boat. When I first start taking the cover off the dingy he is the first one in it and won’t leave till I take him for a ride. He is about 15lbs so great size for the boat bit big enough to play ball with in the yard. He is happy to do anything with anyone anytime.

Saddest picture I've ever seen was a full size alligator swimming down a canal with a full size chocolate lab in it's mouth motionless. You could see it's collar so it was someone's pet. If you live near wildlife like that you have to be vigilant for the pup's sake.

Blueone. We have a 10lb Yorkie that has been on the boat since he was 9 weeks old. As for potty, when we got him, we right away trained him to use a potty pad (synthetic grass pad) and we use one on the boat and one at home in the garage. Don't have to lift anchor or take the dinghy to shore anymore (like we did when we had a lab and golden retriever). Also the home one was to reinforce the use of the potty pad on the boat, but I don't have to take him out in the rain or bad weather while at home.
Just use hot water and dish soap to wash the pad (about once per week).

How about a big dog that thinks it's a lap dog? They don't shed...so...there's that. :)

I checked all the Humane societies within an hour and a half from the house ...I was surprised how few dogs they had...cats galore.

My sister in laws family has a Morkie - Maltese Yorkie mix. She’s allergic to most dogs but does fine with this guy. Looks a lots like the pup in the first post. Jake is a great dog. Super chill, well behaved, great with their your kids. They have a small boat so don’t take him out too much, buts he’s fine with they do.

Based on what I see in my neighborhood this year - dogs are only second to boats when it comes to supply/demand in the Covid economy. Work from home, get yerself a dog! Oiy...

We researched dog breeds that are water/ boat friendly the breeder had the dog choose us we didn’t choose which pup we wanted. he’s a Kerry Blue Terrier (county Kerry Ireland) he’s 10 now and has hated every boat we’ve had we can5 get him in the pool either. He was on the 320 DA as soon as the shrink wrap came off.
He’s a homebody it’s not fair to drag him to the boat he’s a fantastic home / family dog. Ps. My wife took care of her grandmothers Maltese till the dog was 19 years old. Hearty little things.

That's great news. I wish it were that way everywhere. All over the south the rescues are full because of breeders and guys that call themselves hunters. We got our Golden up north, but he came from MS via AL to CT. He was well traveled lol
