I have read a few post concerning folks buying older boats then taking them on their maiden voyage for 100+ miles. Some without the aid of any previous boating courses. I don’t mind throwing caution to the wind once in awhile but this seems and has proven to be fool hearted in many cases. Not only are they risking life and limb but they are risking the lives of their rescuers too.

I am happy that many who have done this and have had problem laden voyages have had a safe ending. There is a difference in manning up and just being stupid.

Just my opinion.

I agree Oldschool. You need to be very familiar and confident with your vessel in a variety of situations. particularly in open water, in unfamilliar territory. I would have the boat trucked home, then spend a lot of time getting to know your new girl. My 2 cents.

Make sure you take a VHF radio and GPS

MAybe some people are taking the Capt. Ron phrases a little to serious?

Heck i get thr jitters every spring when she gets wet.So far no problems other than the loose nut behind the wheel.

I concur, we bought Gimme Time in N Miami and took 7 months and multible short trips a month to get comfortable with her before we head North to the Chesapeake Bay area. Great trip with lots of memories but wouldn't have done it without becoming familiar and comfortable with her before we left. Plenty of people die and put others at unnecessary at risk because of lack of planning.
