Magma Grill Rail Mount (I know, groan!)

Hey Bill, Nice mounting I especially like your "Fender Holder" the Sink!!!:smt038:smt038

HA HA. YUP!! The admirals favorite place to put things as she cleans....

It was Todd who mounted his base under the swim platform ladder door. I thought it was a great idea, and we came close to getting a Magma last year, this was the way we were going to mount it.

I will try and find the thread.

Todds idea is a good one if you do not have swimmers in the water while using the grill who need to get back onboard.

I thought about it long and hard and it is just not practical for use as swimming is a big part of our outings.

WM gave me an infrared model for the same prices as conventional Catalina. Have tried it at home a few times to get used to it before mounting on the boat. I have limited rail space aft and will probably mount the pedestal starboard on the platform.

Yeah if you don't have the swim ladder cover then I agree it's a toe stubber/trip hazard. I would probably use the flush mount kit and figure a way to extend it from around the transom locker area. I like the area of the fish rod mount but I'm not sure I'd trust that to not swing down. I'm sure it's fine though, I'm just not convinced.

Thanks, but I read that thread. I don't have a swim ladder cover or I'd definitely take that route.

I have a different model boat, but I used a 15 degree flush mount rod holder located on the farthest starboard aft corner of the cockpit. I did that to keep the grill over the swim platform during grilling to reduce spill potential in the boat and keep smoke as far away as possible.

It is also used to hold a flag when the grill is not in use.

I first used a 30 degree rod holder but replaced it with a 15 degree mount as it worked better with the grill mounting post.

I could not be happier with the result.

I really like this method but here in Texas that base ring is going to brand someone's foot or backside. OUCH! If I had the covered ladder I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Another issue I think I'd have is that I assume you through bolted the base to the platform. First I'd have to pull the boat and second I'm not sure with the way the platforms constructed that I'd have access to the bottom of the standing surface.

I never noticed a heat problem with it. The swim platform stays pretty wet when its hot out and anyone that might sit on it is wearing a wet swimsuit.

I did not through bolt mine. I planned on it, and even bought all of the hardware to do so. As Dennis said, you can get to the bottom of the platform via the "cavity" in the ER. However, before drilling all the way through, I used a drill stop to only go 3/4" deep on the 1st hole. It did not go all the way through the platform, so I just did all 6 holes that way and used #10 x 3/4" SS screws to hold it down. I filled each hole with sealant before putting the screw in. That thing ain't going nowhere. Through bolting not necessary.

So Charles, did you install the rod holder yourself? Did you just suck it up and drill a big hole in your boat? I assumed you had access to the bottom side. Did you use self-tapping screws or through-bolt it?

If I get the guts this may be the way I go.

That hole may be the original rod holder hole...

My boat is similar enough to yours to show you how we used the transom locker rail to mount our Magma Catalina grill. There were a few key reasons we chose to go this way - a) we wanted to mount the grill permanently, and store it in place; b) our rod holders are covered by the side canvas when it is in place, and so we couldn't use the rod holder method; c) I wanted to stand on the swim platform while grilling, and keep the heat and smoke out of the cockpit.

There hasn't been any problem with the heat affecting the aft seat cushion, and we planned the dinghy davit installation to work with the transom door to the left and the barbeque remaining in place. There are a couple of issues to consider - a) you can't access the transom locker while grilling or until the grill cools, so you need to think ahead if you need anything stored there; b) drippings in the grill leak all over when you lift the locker hatch and the grill tilts 90 degrees, so you need to clean out the bottom of the grill when done (hopefully this won't be an issue when we upgrade to a Solaire grill); the rail mounting tends to slip a bit so I have to tighten the wingnuts down periodically.

I think we have a winner. No new holes or drilling necessary.

I would have to assume that your rail/handle also has an oval cross-section like mine so if the grill stays attached on yours full time I'm sure it'll be fine on mine for a few hours at a time. I plan on putting it away after use each time.

Also good to know that the heat isn't causing any issues with your seat back.

Thanks for the input and the picture. They were a big help.

Yes, I forgot to mention the rail. It is slightly oval, but the 2 mounts have a plastic sleeve that compresses around the rail so that isn't a problem. I will say though that the mounting and dismounting on the rail is awkward, so removing the grill and storing it each time you use it will be a chore. It's not easy like just loosening a quick release clamp and sliding it off of a rod holder mount. I'm glad my info was useful for you.

Why not a 15 degree fishing rod holder installed somewhere below the "360" ? Quick to put up and take down & does not interfere with the transom locker door. It is also off to the side and out of the way of everything else. The rod mount can also double as a flag holder.

Like La Maddaelena, I also mounted my Magma Newport grill on rail on transom storage locker. I've done that in my current boat (340DA) and my previous boat (300DA). I've NEVER had problem with heat affecting gel coat or seat cushion. This mounting method has many advantages already mentioned. I'll do the same on my next boat as well.

Hope this helps "seal the deal" on your mounting options.

I have the IR Catalina. Actually to be technically correct, I have the Catalina, retrofitted to Infrared. The only difference is that the IR version has three steel plates that heat up with the flame and then provide indirect heat. I had purchased mine months before the IR option came out and called Magma to purchase the upgrade separately.

Net/net - It really is not infrared and I would say it is not worth the upgrade.

Well I can see you must prefer this method because you sure ain't skeered of cutting holes in your boat. WOW, look at those speaker mounts! :wow: Verry cool

Thanks
