We generally spend about 20 nights a year up on the island. Honestly, it was one of the few things left to look forward to this summer with all that has been going on, and now it’s been taken too. We had our first stay booked starting in a few weeks and I have been thinking about it regularly. Surprisingly not another fallout from COVID, but a casualty of the high water levels.

Man that's a bigtime bummer. I was considering an August run up to the island. It's a boating bucket list item for me.

I wonder how the occupancy will be up there this year with this. It usually seems quite full?

Well, I guess no trip to the island this year for us. We were considering it, since our trip to Port Austin for 4th of July is now up in the air. From what I understand, Port Austin's main dock (West Dock) took some major damage this winter and they are not accepting new reservations for this season. I have a reservation but I am awaiting the MI DNR to contact me to let me know what the deal is.

Wow, I didn’t hear about the damage to Port Austin. Hope they are able to get that repaired. The high lake levels could be affecting more harbors with fixed docks as the water starts to rise again this summer.

I'm surprised the pylons on the shore slips can't be energized. Wiring must run under the rocks or something along the wall or it's all interconnected with the T pier.

I talked to Derrick (harbor master) yesterday. He said there is no power at any of the slips including shore slips. He went on to say that if the water comes up another inch or two, he may have to close all the shore slips permanently this season. Any sort of wave action from an east wind is making the shore slips too dangerous and another few inches will force the decision.

Sorry to hear that Jeff, we will be in Charlevoix first part of July for a few days, will stop and say hi.
That probably means they will cancel the Chicago to Mackinac Sailboat race also?

Sounds good! We were supposed to be at Mackinac that week, but we may end up going somewhere else. It’s always good to see you guys so hopefully our paths will cross.

And yes, I just read yesterday that Chicago Mac cancelled, but due to COVID rules being uncertain in Chicago, not due to marina conditions on the island. Port Huron is on though as Michigan has opened back up at this point to meet the criteria.

I imagine a few ferry boat wakes is all that will be needed to force his decision. I'm curious if those captains have been asked to be conscious of their wakes within the harbor break walls.

Great question. I’m one of the guys that calls the ferry captains out on channel 16 when they rock the harbor. It’s usually pretty effective because they know CG Sector St. Ignace closely monitors 16. I’ve actually noticed a few times the St. Ignace boat showing up in the harbor 30-45 minutes after I chirp the ferries on 16.
