I am installing a new gps/sonar unit (Lowrance 339) It came with a separate speed sensor. Is there any reason to install it on the transom? My old gps just measured speed through the gps function. I hate to drill more holes through the transom.

Check the manual. Is it just a speed sensor or speed and depth? If it's only speed, and you don't care about speed over water, then don't install it. Most people care about GPS speed (speed over ground) anyways, so most likely you can skip it (unless the depth sensor is also there).

It has both. I talked to Lowrance today and they said that the only reason to install it was if I was slow trolling and wanted to be able to see slow speeds. Apparently they claim its accurate to the 1/4 mph and fishermen use it for downrigger fishing.

They are important to fisherman not because of the accuracy but because they measure speed through the water and not speed over ground. So if their lures work best at say 1.5 MPH and they are going upstream into a 1.5MPH current the transom mount sensor will say they are going 1.5MPH but the gps will say they are going 0 MPH. On your boat I would say to skip it.
