ok so i replaced the impeller on my alpha 1, but I forgot to put the gear select into forward before I removed the lower unit. I put it back together now the prop doesnt spin freely in neutral, it does not turn one way and it turn the other way but makes a clunking sound as if its not all the way in a gear.. any recomendations.???

Reccomendation? Ya, take the drive back off and start over with the selector in forward! PIA, but the only way to do it. Good luck

You will need to drop the lower, Then put the throttle in forward, Now on the lower unit, You will need to turn the prop counter clockwise at the same time you will need to find and turn the shift shaft arm (Or shaft) on the lower unit, (It's just forward of the impeller housing towards the bow) You will need to turn the shifter arm clockwise all the way till it locks while turning the prop counter clockwise and holding pressure on the prop so the shift arm will not move back out of forward gear.

Some guys use a bungee cord to hold the prop to the left (counter clockwise) so it won't move, Then when you go to install the lower you will need to turn the prop more to the left (counter clockwise) to line up the splines in the upper housing, But do not let the prop turn back to the right or you will miss the shift arm again and have the same problem that you are having right now. Some models they have a special tools to turn the shift shaft on the lower unit to help make it easier, But you don't really need it. Hope this helps, Good luck with it.
